  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Will she need a probiotic....

RococoRabbitz

Young Bun
.... while on antibiotics?

Our beautiful Lulu is going to have her neuter op on the 26th of this month. She will have her op in the morning and then stay at the vet's for the rest of the day and overnight. She will receive painkillers and antibiotics. Now I'm wondering, won't she need a probiotic also...? I know there are probiotics on the market which help to re-establish the 'good' bacteria in a bunny's digestive tract when on antibiotics - but I'm sure my vet hasn't mentioned this ...? Or would this be given routinely anyway..? :?

I'm sure you all know a lot more about these things than I do as Lulu & Diva are my first rabbits...!

I don't think so I think she will be fine with what your vet gives her esp since she is getting pain relief but I'm sure someone with more expertise will be along soon

why are they giving her anti biotics? it isn't usually standard?

I would say yes to the probiotic though as neutering is stressful. Start her a week before on the Pro C as suggested.

Thanks for the advice! I had no idea they were selling it at P@H.... I spent ages googling for it...

They are routinely giving antibiotics after ops, to prevent any infections. I personally think it's a great idea - except that ABs kill the 'good' bacteria as well as the harmful ones. Which is bad news for a bunny...
