  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Widget has a strange illness. Help! .....UPDATE post 28

We're just back from vet. Widget is so much brighter. The vet was one who was in the hospital when Widget was admitted. Vet said he was pleased to see how good Widget is looking. It really was touch and go last week and that Widge had a huge lesion in his throat. Vet didn't want to upset Widge so just felt him all over today and didn't attempt to look down his throat. He gave him another injection and said they don't want to suddenly stop the antibiotics, risking a relapse. We go back next Tuesday. Widge is now lying on the cold concrete in the shade in the garden, with Ginny in attendance. Funny pair!

What a huge relief that Widget has responded so well to the antibiotic. How he came to contract the infection will remain another of life's mysteries ! x

I'm so glad the treatment is working FB

It's good to know we have these expert vets on hand should we need them :D

Thanks everyone. I can remember, as a child, my Aunty Hazel, who was animal mad, getting upset when her vet would often say, "I'm so sorry, but there's nothing we can do for him/her and the kindest thing is to let him/her go. "
Thank goodness we've come such a long way with veterinary care nowadays.

You might me surprised that a lot of vets still say this! And rabbit savvy ones at that - because they don't know what to do. However, we know we can find information easily, and talk on Forums like this, and find vets who will help us in our bunny's hour of need.

I'm really thankful for them :D

I think Rabbit Veterinary Medicine has progressed a long way over the last 10-15 years. Not as quickly as in other Species, but better than it was. I think that it is the Exotics part of the VM Syllabus that needs changing as it is still such a small part of the course. It is really only if an individual Vet opts to specialise in Exotics that they take it upon themselves to further their knowledge of Exotics.

My Vet and her colleagues will always offer me a Referral to an Exotics Specialist if a case exceeds their own expertise. I am lucky in that respect.

Widget and I have been back to the vet this morning. I had to get hubby to take me as I was so stressed out and feeling horrendously sick. It's been four weeks with Widget's illness. The vet was pleased with him. His lungs were lovely and clear and his eyes are bright, his weight has gone up. He now weighs 1.83 kgs. His regular weight should be 2.3kgs. He went down to 0.98kg. He still feels very boney under all the fluffy fur. He's still quieter than normal and sleeps for longer. I got some Recovery to give him to help build him up.
He had another Alamycin injection, this is hopefully his last. The vet also removed what I thought was a scab in his nostril, it wasn't a scab, it was a 'bogie'! Trust Widget! Just a revue next week. See how he's doing! What a relief,

The weight gain is great and hopefully that will continue. As he really was very poorly I think it will take a bit more time for him to get fully back to normal. Thank goodness your Vet is so on the ball xx

Oh great relief all around!

I'm glad his weight has gone up. It's amazing how much we love to see our skinny little ones put on weight :D

Thank you everyone for your support, interest and good wishes. It's been a trying time. I was so tired and stressed this morning, so I went to bed after hubby went to work at 1 o'clock. I managed to get 3 hours sleep. I'm up and about now. Widget and Ginny are both flaked out in their usual muddle. I put a clean litter tray in for Heather and Rosie. Put tortoise away for the night. I've even steamed the kitchen floor, so I'm feeling relieved and more relaxed. Going to clean my parrots and hamster out this evening. Hopefully I should have a better night tonight.
Thank you, especially to Jane. You are so kind. We all need your input, you're so knowledgeable and understanding.

Thank you  I am so glad that Widget has recovered. It really is so stressful when one of our Rabbits is seriously ill and when for a while not even a Vet can tell us whether the Rabbit can pull through.

I am now going to follow Ginny and Widget's example and flake out in my usual muddle !!

I hope you sleep tonight after your afternoon nappette :D

It's emotionally draining keeping animals, that's for sure :)
