  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

What to do to help with gas problem?

You can ask your vet, but from what I've read some experts don't think probiotics work for buns. It's common for that to happen to the poop whilst they're on antibiotics tho, after they've finished the course I've found things normally go back to normal in a few days naturally, so you may not need anything anyway :)

Really? Have you ever used probiotics for your rabbits?

I have for Atticus with his megacolon condition, they didn't do anything really. I haven't bothered for my normal buns, their poop just improved after a few days with no meds and it seemed unnecessary and extra stress to do it for them. I think the rabbit digestive system is really harsh inside? And the thought is nothing can actually survive it really, which probiotics need to be able to survive to do anything in the gut.. My exotic specialist thinks they're pointless for buns and a waste of money, I think it's one of those things though where everyone has a different opinion on it tho [emoji38][emoji38]

It's my first time care a rabbit, I'm stressed out about everything. :|

Haha so you say it's always the same :D
Yep, pretty much [emoji38] honestly I don't think we'll have rabbits long term, obviously gunna have the ones we've got and I want them all to live a very long time, I love my 4 so so much, but I find rabbits so fragile and tricky. I've mainly had dogs and cats growing up and I much prefer having a dog tbh (purely for the less worry, I much prefer the bunny smell, well lack of tbh as they're so clean, and I love how gentle and sweet rabbits are) so yea I absolutely love rabbits, but they make my anxiety crazy sometimes.. I think it doesn't help that Atticus and Clementine have a lot of long term health issues which require a lot of management, they're my everything though, I could never part from them, they're just very stressful! Really rabbits are very kind but very sensitive. Having a rabbit as my first pet was extra worrying. :D If it was a cat or a dog maybe it would be different but good thing I have Cookie. :) I really love him, sometimes even more than myself. :)

Probiotics must be able to survive passage through stomach, plus they must be correct strains of bacteria to help in cecum and intestine to be beneficial. I never found beneficial.

I also tried prEbiotics with limited success.
