  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Update on Sebastian with eyelid tumour

My rabbit Sebastian, nearly 10 with eyelid tumour, bad news! ☹️
The vet has been brilliant, he aspirated the tumour and took cultures which came back and showed he had advanced malignant melanoma which has metastasised unfortunately.

They said they could debulk his eye tumour if it gets too uncomfortable. He said prognosis is he has multiple weeks left. He seems fine at the moment, although increasingly annoyed by his eye. He is on loxicom and doesn’t appear to be in particular pain. I clean up his eye which tends to bleed daily. The vet says there is usually a best period of time to put them to sleep, will I just know when that is?

The tumour started in January and I didn’t take him in until March due to the lockdown and my previous vet never suggested removal on the lump when it was much smaller, I feel a bit bad I could have saved him but it sounds like this cancer is aggressive.

Many Thanks
Ellie

I am very sorry that it is not better news. I hope that Sebastian will remain well within himself for as long as possible. You are the best person to judge his quality of life, he will let you know when you need to let him go x

I'm so sorry you didn't get better news. :( I'm glad Sebastian seems to be doing fine right now, though, and doesn't seem to be in pain, although that's understandable that he's annoyed by his eye. I agree with IM that you're the best person to decide whether the good in his life outweighs the bad, and that Sebastian will likely let you know when it's time.
