Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

rabbit not eating

cathi

New Kit
i have a 12 mnth old dwarf lop earred rabbit emma, we've never had any problems with her. we went on honeymoon and left her with a friend for 2 weeks, just got her back home and she's not eating her rabbit pellets. according to the friend she hasn't been eating for 3-4 days (she thought it was the food she had to buy her) we've given her a carrot and she ate that, when i let her out she started licking the floor, it was wet, so i got her a saucer with water in and she was drinking it for a while, we dont think she's using her water bottle. she's still very alert, some poo's in the cage.
the firends where she stayed had 3 cats, emma was allowed to run round the house and played with the cats (i know, she thinks she is one!) they had no problems with the cats and her and was never not supervised with them.
im also worried as we were naughty and have never got her vaccinated.
should i take her to the vets? or wait a little longer, could it be she's unsettled? im not too worried yet as she's still her usual self except she usually loves her food!!!
thankyou for any advice

Is she eating, drinking and pooing now?

If yes, then when you take her to be vaccinated, mention it to the vet (although I doubt that a rabbit could survive not eating for 3-4 days without medical treatment, perhaps she meant she was just eating hay?).

If she is not eating etc now, you really do need to get her to the vets ASAP.

Agree with Frisky Clover, if she is not eating then you should take her to the vets asap.

Is it just pellets she is not eating. Suggest you try her with different foods to tempt her and if she will not eat then get her to the vet as rabbits can go downhill very quickly.

Try to get her to take some more fluids. Add a dash of boiling water to make it lukewarm and try giving it her in a bowl rather than a bottle. You could also try and syringe some if she is not taking any fluids on her own (you can get a syringe from supermarket pharmacy).

Also keep her warm and get her to move around a bit to try and get her gut moving.

Hope she starts eating soon.

it seems to be just the pellets she's not eaten for the last 3-4 days, she's eating carrots and eating the grass in the garden. its just unusual for her not to eat the pellets. there are poo's in her hutch which look normal. we checked the water bottle to see if it wasnt working for any reason but it seems to be working fine. she's still very active and acting her usual happy self.
