Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Poor coat condition

Dot

Warren Scout
One of my buns has a really poor coat, like the base of the hair is almost scabby (though it's coat rather than skin). It only used to be like that when she was moulting, but now it's like that all the time. Not contagious as none of the others have it, and it doesn't affect her whole body, just a wide strip down her back - probably what she can't get at to groom. It doesn't seem to bother her either and the skin underneath looks fine, but combing it out leaves practically bald patches.

Any suggestions as what it could be? She's got a vets appointment coming up, but would be nice to know if anyone else has come across it and what to do to treat it.

Could be mites (my friend's rabbit had not disimilar symptoms). Treatment for this is usually quite straightforawrd and successful. Is the vet appointment soon?

Vet is in just under 2 weeks. I've ordered some mite treatment a few days ago though, so should get that in the next couple of days. I'd just have expected at least her pair bond to show some symptoms if it was something like that.

My friend's rabbit is single, but I've seen a few reports on here of one rabbit only out of a bond getting mites. I think I'd want an earlier appointment if she was mine in case the fur loss is symptomatic of something more serious.

Sounds like it could well be mites then. I'll speak to the vet and see if they think she needs to go in earlier but, to be honest, if it was anything serious I'd expect to have seen something more by now. She's eating and exercising as normal and is perfectly fine in herself and just isn't bothered by it at all.
