Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Overgrown tooth problems, bit of advice?

Hi so since Christmas Casper has had a problem with an overgrown bottom tooth. He is about 7 and a half now in age and he's going to the vet every 6ish weeks now to get it trimmed everytime. When he went down at first the vet he was seeing didn't want to put him under to remove the tooth as she says he is too old for it and he might not pull through she says but he's just been down on Friday and saw a different vet and she recommends putting him under and just removing it or we'll just be taking him down every 6 weeks. Also he is eating still but he's definitely skinner than he used too be so I'm worried too about the anaesthetic . I am just looking for some opinions for and against as Casper is my oldest rabbit and I've never had one need anaesthetic at that age before.:?

I have had many Rabbits aged 7+ who have had numerous GAs without any problems. If the Vet is Rabbit Savvy, which the first one does not seem to be based on his/her comments, then I would certainly consider extraction as an option. It will also enable the Vet to take a good look at the molar teeth (cheek teeth). Troublesome Incisors often mean troublesome molars too. This could account for your Rabbit's weightloss.

Exactly what Jane said.

My 2 year old has dentals regularly - her jaw is just so far out of line it will always happen.

But he advised me they are more at risk because they are smaller etc but more often then not if they're fit and healthy they would cope fine with the ga. I would go for it but then that's me my vets before the one I'm with now constantly told.me to have her put to sleep! Is never going to happen unless she needs to be and suffering.- perhaps check on how much experience with rabbits your vet has or find another one who is a specialist, it made all the difference when I found one. X

Thanks both of you for the advice and comments:wave: Good too know other bunnies older than Casper have come through fine
