OMG Bobbie is Building a Nest!! U/D 17th June

Also, don't know how likely it is but what if Bobbie thinks the older Boblets ate the babies and turns on them in defense? :?

I know with rats that the milk produced at various stages of the babies' lives is different, and a rat that gets pregnant while nursing a litter has problems feeding the older ones as she reverts back to the original 'newborn milk' near her due date which doesn't provide the older kittens with the correct nutrition :?

If your going to remove a new born litter then I would at least leave them with her one to three days for them to get the essential colostrum they need to stand any chance of survival with hand rearing. Maybe even taking away the older litter just for a day to allow her to do this.
I dont envy you Jane, its a difficult situation to be in. Poor mummy bun, fingers crossed its a false alarm.
I dont really have any advise sorry, the 2 or 3 times I've dealt with nursing does who then have a second litter whilst still nursing have always killed the second litter at newborn, those cases when you dont know a second pregnancy is happening untill you find the little things thrown out the next morning:cry: I guess its nature, the strongest survive and all that, moms obviously prioritised their bigger, stronger kits. Sorry I'm waffling and not helping x

Hi

What ever you decide to do Jane I'm sure you will make the right decision. I have every faith in you to do what is best. I's sure none of us would want to be in your shoes.

Good Luck

Maureen

Oh Jane, my heart goes out to you:cry:   & Bobbie:cry:

Thinking of you & you know where i am, I know you will do what is best.

Be aware Jane that if you remove the newborns they WILL die. There is no 'if' here. The survival rate for handrearing babies that young is microscopic. Be in no doubt either that it is not a pleasant death. Tbh it would be more humane to have the newborns pts than to try to hand rear at that age (my opinion is not to do either of these things, but let nature take its course).

Milk substitute is no good as a substitute for rabbit milk in babies that young, they need to take too much in to get the equivalent nutrients and it ruins their internal organs. If we get orphan bunnies in aged under a few weeks we try to find someone with a nursing mum - if we don't they inevitably die, regardless of frequency of feeding or extensive care given.

Please don't take this as a personal attack, I think you do wonderful work with your buns Jane. It is a horrible situation to be put in.

Are you near Janice? Did Lady Jane come from the same place? If she does have a litter tonight and it's only a small one it might be possible to foster the babies on to her.

Having lost four out of five babies that were 7 days old I'd agree that from birth there is pretty much no chance with handrearing :(

Just read through this..and all I can say is I'm so sorry you are in this position:cry:
I would agree with leaving the newborsn with Bobbie for a couple of days at least..she may well get much more stressed if they all disappear right after she has given birth.
We have had mums with litters in twice before where the mother has had 3 litters in a row..the mums had coped but were run down...
there is no easy decision here.
Thinking of you xx

Lady Jane has got a litter by the look of things. Jane is not far from me.

I am doing some hutch juggling in the morning to keep the babies apart but allow mum access to both litters, a method I have used before.

Jane

Do you want me to bring the older buns over here, I can let them socialise with the other babies so they can get their learnt behaviour from them instead of Bobbie. That would give Bobby a rest and she can concentrate on them and recovering herself.

Have just spoken with Jane and there are no babies yet and no sign of Bobbie having given birth!!, unlike Lady Jane there is no debris, just a lovely big nest!!
