  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Nena (tooth root abscess) - Final U/D December...she's still fine :)

Good luck with the rest of the treatment. Really hope it works so you can avoid another GA. I can't imagine how stressful it would be to have to squeeze an abcess. Keeping my fingers crossed for Nena.

How's Nena been today?

Thank you for asking about her! I hadn't bothered checking back after 6pm the night after my post, figured nobody was interested

Surprisingly there appears to be an improvement in the size of the abscess. Something the vet did under anaesthetic must have helped open a hole and it's enabled her to push some of the pus out. I've been continuing to massage and it doesn't seem to have gone down much from that, but I'm doing it anyway. A little bit is better than none at all!

Also, Nena has now started eating cabbage leaves again, albeit ripped into 1 x 1 cm chunks. She's only eaten coriander, hawthorn, pellets/mush/puree and some bits of hay/readigrass since this started 5 weeks ago. She ate nearly a whole savoy cabbage leaf last night and had a bit of a rumbly belly this morning so I've avoided giving her anymore and it seems fine now. I'll have to limit how much she has, but I'm pleased there's another thing she's willing to eat!

Just gave them a run around the garden :)

I'm sorry I haven't replied to your pm... but I'm really pleased Nena is seeming better :D

One thing my vet suggested with Charlie's ear was warm and then cold compresses to help massage it and that might help it drain... I can't remember whether he said that would or wouldn't help if it was a tooth root abscess :? (this was before we had him in and had it drained and knew it was an ear infection) but his thought at that point was that it wouldn't hurt anything.

I don't know whether anyone else with an abscess bunny has been told similar or whether its something your vet might have any idea about. Sorry my memory isn't better!!

Hope the check up this week is positive xx

Nena is in for her operation tomorrow. Gotta drop her off at 8am. I'm worried and sad.

That sounds quite positive. I'm so pleased she has improved a little, I love your bunnies

Ooh, thank you very much !

Ah no problem, I'm sure you're busy :) My vet hadn't mentioned any compresses when I last visited, I may ask tomorrow :)

Sending vibes to Nena

My wee fella is going through something similar and I could relate to what you put in your first post.

My wee bun has an abcess behind the eye or at least thats wot we think as he's not well enuff to go under GA and he's 11 which poses even more of a risk. Like ur bun hes on penicillin injections every 2 days and baytril twice a day. His eye bulged out but has went down a bit , Prior to that he had a bad case of snuffles and was doing well until his eye bulged out . tomorrow is his fourth penicillin injection. yesterday the vet spoke about how long to continue it for as if 3 injections were quite a lot. But after reading ur post and some on here I feel he would need a long course of treatment.

I am hoping for a mircale for my wee man

Hope your bun gets well soon

Thank you for your wishes. Penicillin (well, depocillin) can be given for a long time in rabbits. It's suggested that abscess buns are continued on depocillin for up to 6 months after the abscess heals, so that's on top of the 3-6 months of depocillin that it can take to get rid of the abscess. 4 doses is definitely not enough, and your vet shouldn't be suggesting a course so short because of antibiotic resistance. There are people on here who've had their buns on depocillin for 3 years or more, so long courses of treatment can definitely be given.

Are you happy with your vet? Does he seem knowledgeable about rabbits? If you're concerned or want a second opinion, you can always ask for a 'rabbit-savvy' vet on here in rabbit chat or somewhere - people can often recommend vets that are much more specialised and can give better care.

Mega mega vibes for Nena tomorrow. xxx

Thank you!

Nena's abscess is substantially smaller. The lump is barely there compared to very obvious and bulging before. Hopefully this will mean it's easy to remove the tooth. I'd like it to be removed really to prevent re-occurrence.

Thanks everyone. Not long got back from dropping her off - it's a good 50-60 minutes or more each way in rush hour! Feeling nervous.

Heard back from the vets. My vet and another one (Andy Barstow) were both there today to oversee the op. Under x-ray they could see that the abscess hasn't gone down much at all in size, so they decided (after some deliberating) to open her up and see what's going on. So they opened up her cheek and found that the abscess is present not only on the outside but all the way through her jaw bone and into the inside of her mouth where it's still very large. The affected tooth is basically mush, she said, and so there was no point her taking it out as it'll just come away presumably. There were no sharp bits on the tooth to hurt her, it's all mush. So they've inserted two drains (one in the cheek, one underneath) in order to be able to scrape away the pus and clean for a few days. She's staying in until at least thursday which'll give her 4 proper cleans, and they've also upped her baytril dose (and painkillers obviously).

Interestingly enough, they could see what looked like four more tooth roots behind the furthest back tooth - so she thinks at some point, Nena may have had another tooth there that's crumbled/mushed away.

Well, poor little Nena.
Hope that the wash-outs etc will do the trick and she'll feel better very soon.

Oh poor Nena, I really hope that she starts to feel more comfortable very soon.

In my experience both Andy and Claire at de Montfort are brilliant bunny savvy vets and will do their utmost to help Nena.

Sending healing vibes for Nena. xxxxxxxxx

Oh poor Nena :(
I really hope they are able to get these abscesses and tooth rot under control. Poor bun. I have almost constant dental pain due to having so many deep crowns and fillings, plus gum recession and exposed dentin...I can well imagine how uncomfy that must be. :(
Glad to hear she has such great vets on her case and a loving mum to care for her :)
