  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Leo's Dental

Leo went for his dental this morning. I've been on tenterhooks as I've not heard from the vet.
vet just rang - she was sounding very excited. The vets are absolutely delighted with how things went and were even more pleased because of how he came out of the anaesthetic - the nurse said he was still under the effects of the anaesthetic and she waived a cranberry under his nose. She said his nose started twitching ten to the dozen and he came round straight away and scoffed the cranberry. She was quite taken by that sort of recovery and he's chilling in the pen waiting to be discharged. All went well - he wasn't under for long and I have to pick him up at 2:30. For those with a decididly warped sense of humour, I find that time rather ironic if you say it and think about it.
So I'll be back by 3pm and Leo can chill back at home. There's just me to keep him company as wife is away at her mums and Flo is too occupied chasing birds off the lawn!

Love that

So glad it went well and he will be back home soon!

Way to go Leo! I'm absolutely loving the cranberry wake up method.

Sending vibes for a happy munchy boy this evening.

2:30  :D I'd not have noticed if you hadn't pointed it out! (I'm so tired today) So cranberries are Leo's smelling salts? Excellent, and much tastier!

Well done Leo, glad you enjoyed your wakey up cranberry, I'm sure you'll have a few more treats later :D

Quick update. The nurse was incredibly praising of just how well Leo took everything. Amazed at his awsome power of recovery. They found one of his molars poorly aligned which caused the worse spur.
I got him home and he charged out of the carrier and stuck his whole face in the water bowl and drank a huge amount - obviously the anaesthetic effects. He checked the place out then had the munchies and has chomped on lots of food that he’s not really shown interest in for the last few days.
One weird thing is that he used to have helicopter ears but now he’s got 2 floppy ears. I’m puzzled by this.
So far all is well and I’ll continue to monitor and give him some metacam tonight.

At least one loppy ear with be from the fluids iv. I guess it's possible they did both?

Or it could be Leo expressing his displeasure with the trip?

Rodney has uppy ears but one was helicopter for about 3 weeks after his admission.

This was my thought too. Good boy Leo  I hope he recovers well.

Glad he is home and has recovered well. Snowflake was uppy eared as a baby but now he is helicoptor or drooping eared.
