Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ingested plastic

As the title suggests, one of my rabbits has ingested some plastic overnight. I use a pipette to feed my fish and must've dropped it on the floor last night without realising. I remember hearing some nibbling when I was in bed but I didn't think anything of it tbh. Anyway, I found the pipette on the floor this morning with a chunk missing. I can't find it anywhere, although that's not to say it isn't somewhere on the floor, it could just be hard to see. I'm assuming however from the teeth marks on the rest of the pipette that one of the rabbits has eaten it. It's probably about the length of a thumbnail, if it has been eaten they would've had to chew it up into smaller bits but I'm really scared it's going to cause a blockage or that whoever has eaten it won't be able to pass it. They're both in good spirits this morning, I've seen both eat and drink. I haven't seen them go to the toilet but their litter trays do have poop in them. I've had to leave them as I need to go into the office today, should I be worried? If it happened last night would I have noticed any ill effects by now? I've included a picture of the pipette, it's made of bendy plastic so isn't "sharp" but obviously not designed to be eaten!

Really hoping it moves through ok. Rudey chomped a good chunk of a syringe off once & ate it. I called my vet & they said to keep a close eye on him, look out for any signs of gastro-intestinal discomfort & that he was eating & popping normally. he was ok

Thanks for your reassurance. I think I'm more worried because there's no one home to keep an eye on them today. I hope they're both fine by the time we get home this evening, I'll be watching them like a hawk as soon as I get in! I'm guessing any issues would show themselves by that point but not sure.

I honestly don't know. This is from memory so may not be accurate but I think I read somewhere it takes 18 hours or so for stuff to move through a bunnies digestive tract. Sending them lots of vibes

A couple of mine have nibbled plastic litter trays and have been all right. It makes you wonder how they manage to digest it though, also lino! Hope they will be ok.

My Heidi gets disposible litterboxes after she began chewing her plastic litterbox and the small missing pieces were not found. I monitored her for eating and fresh poo a few times each day, and even checked all her poo for days and found nothing.,
Your vet may have suggestions if you call. Perhaps give extra fresh greens and encourage fiber intake.

Sending vibes.

My boyfriend popped home about an hour ago and fed them both a treat which they both eagerly accepted. It sounds like they're OK but I'll be watching them when I get in later!

I hope that means they'll be okay. It's scary when they eat things they shouldn't.
