Important Information Re: RVHD2-Please Read

I saw a nurse and she just said they were expecting it to arrive in 50 dose bottles and that it hadn't come through yet, no idea as to quantity ordered.

That's interesting - I wonder if vets are getting a choice of single or multi-dose bottles. I had a conversation on FB where someone said it was being sent in multi-dose bottles so the vets would have to hold vaccination clinics, but at our practice it is definitely in the single dose vials, I've both seen it and asked them. I hope further supplies aren't going to be multi-dose only that could really scupper things:?

Fortunately for us CVG has so many rabbity clients they could probably use up several 50 dose bottles in one day. But it will be tricky for smaller practices who have fewer clients wanting it. I wonder if CVG chose to get the larger vials in knowing the demand they already have (could it be cheaper that way?). Or maybe a shortage of single dose vials?

After contacting over 30 different vets non are stocking the vaccine grr.
All are going off this one exotic specialist vet who's saying it's not in the UK. I can't believe someone who claims to be a exotic specialist knows nothing about this. Totally shocking.

can you not get them to contact the RWA?

I don't know if you are aware of this thread:

http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/s...bbits-exposed-to-VHD-U-D-Response-from-Rescue

The information in it may be useful for getting somebody to listen in your area that there is a genuine risk and *maybe* help you to get the vaccine available.

I contacted my local vets (in Cheam, Surrey) and they are in the process of ordering the vaccine in for their bunny patients. They are not listed in the RWAF rabbit savvy list but have been excellent any time we've needed to use them, so The news of the need for the vaccine and availability does seem to be filtering through :)

Sooo, FHB has just posted this on Facebook:

"I have just had notification from Animal and Plant Health Agency- the lab that run the RHVD2 test -that they will no longer be running it. Only the standard test for RHD but they won't be able to differentiate between the two strains. How frustrating is that? I could say something quite rude."

"Animal and Plant Health Agency" is a government agency ... surely they should be making sure vets have access to this service not making it as hard as possible to get a definite diagnosis... Much as we don't think of rabbits as livestock you'd think the government would se it as a potential threat to livestock and take it seriously... *sigh*

That's why I keep banging on about why DEFRA is not more involved ?

Saw CVG vet today - they have ordered in. but no news about arrival yet. Owner of practice (head vet there) said she had to go through a lot of administrative hoops and forms to do so - so I can imagine that some practices who dont specialise in exotics might be put off.

Our vets aren't getting it in for the reasons parsnipbun mentions above, but gave us the details of an exotic specialist who are further away but have said we can get our little guy vaccinated there once they get it in xxx

Ohhh, what has been said? Are they confident enough with their supply?

I just asked if they were putting the second dose aside and the answer was that they would be ordering more and they have plenty left, so yes, I guess, confident with their supply.

Cool. Thank You for checking it out. I still reckon I'll be calling before I set off though.
Have all your bunnies received their first now?

Another batch tomorrow then they will all be done. With a bit of luck the road will be open again by the time of the second doses so travel time will be a lot less and I can be more flexible on time as I'm going mid-mornings to avoid rush hour in Otley/Ilkley.

Have all yours been okay after the vac too?

Yeah completelyfine. The sense of relief I felt just having their first jabs was huge & I didn't even realise it was on my mind much

My lovely rabbit savvy vet, in Ivybridge/Plymouth in Devon, is looking into getting the vaccine in, which is a relief. She is the dedicated vet at my local rescue who have had confirmed case of VHD2 there which hopefully will push her practice into completing the paperwork and ordering it in. She said she will update me in a week or so once I have returned from my holiday.

Happy to keep people posted if they want to be :)
