hypothermic bun - best thing to do?

I agree with Jane. IMO she should have been admitted and put on a heat blanket or wrapped in veterinary heat wraps and given fluids sub-cut or IV to get her fluids and sugars up. If she's back with you now I would have her in a warm room on a heat pad and wrapped up in blankets or held for body warmth. Keep her eating and her fluids up too - whatever the vet says, a hypothermic bun is normally a bun where their digestion has ground to a halt and as a result they become internally dehydrated (in the guts) even if peripherally they seem normal.

I totally respect both of your opinions and have called my friend who is a vet and he's coming round tonight and will admit her locally once he's decided how she is.

Terrible quality video, but can someone reassure me that this is just scanning?

Well Liz and jacks Jane and other specialists will know better than I do - but from experience I have that is not 'normal' scanning but something neurological - perhaps related to the hypothermia????? or the starvation???

Re getting her warm again - warmed subcut fluids and holding her against you are the best things (that is how you warm people - holding them with you skin to skin) but if there is a problem with that (poss mites etc) then wrap her in vetbed or anything else fluffy and warm and place somwhere gently warming - NOT hot.

 nothing helpful to add I'm sorry, just sending lots of vibes for the poor girlie sounds like she's been through a lot

It looks like she has horizontal nystagmus (eyes flicking side-to-side)

To me it sounds as though she is one very poorly Rabbit

:cry::cry:

Is there anything else I can check for before the vet comes round? I've checked her all over for flystrike, she's done some poos and they look okay. She's taking her syringe feeds, she's on a heatpad and (hopefully) gradually warming up...Her eyes are red and sore and she has a spot (like a stye) on one of them.

Her genitals dont look swollen do they ?

Just looked. no... thank goodness. Pink and normal sized.

I think all you can do now is wait for your Vet friend who will hopefully provide any appropriate treatment.

I really cant understand the other Vet not offering any treatment in this situation :?

what's your postcode liz? I've forgotten again!

I've just googled it and I think I am about 15 minutes further than alice. But if she is very poorly but well enough to travel I will happily help out if Alice is tied up with all her rescue buns.

Sending lots of vibes for bunny xx

If you need any help with this bunny then please give me a shout, I am not that far away and can nurse during the day if needed

Theo or Liz I'd be grateful if either of you could take a look at her. I think she will need proper testing somewhere.

At worst there is something wrong with her and that's why she's got those neurological signs and sore eyes and best case scenario she's just been so starved in the cold that it's caused parts of her body to slow down that are gradually warming up now.

Let me see what the vet says tonight. She's brightening up each minute, which is good. The difference to when I first got her is already quite big.

Do you still have my mobile number? Just text me if needed as I wont be around on RU much,

ETA If Theo is now helping then no problems

No but I'm in Banbury on Thursday morning at 9.30....

Tomorrow I'm at work in Shipton Under Wychwood.

The thing is I really think she needs a vet asap, did you say you have a vet visiting tonight?, let me know what he/she says and I can come a meet you late tonight or we can arrange something else?

It's great that she's eating both syringe and voluntarily. There is nothing like food in the tummy to bring body temperature back up to normal. Buns are a bit like horses reliant on food metabolism to manufacture body heat so this is great that she's eating, very positive from the hypothermia point of view. No idea about the rest other than if it is a neurological nystagmus then I suppose active EC or a middle ear infection/cranial abcesses are a possibility :? But this is way beyond me. Good luck and well done for everything you have done and are doing for her. x

I agree with this.

Lots of vibes for the poor Bun xx

I'll see what the vets says tonight, he's coming at 9pm. She's drinking and eating and pooing at the moment and is a lot more active than in the video, but she is still doing that scanning/not scanning thing. I've combed out a few of the matts in her fur and I'll give her another hour and make a decision. Can you PM me your mobile number Theo?
