Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

help! updated #49 on baytril - doughnut is making a strange sound

I dont know if the business remains a partnership, but initially it was. I dont think he realised just how in demand Rabbit Savvy Vets are, especially Exotics Qualified ones.

Yes. I remember being amazed when I saw him especially after being told by other specialist doughnut was really well. He looked into her eyes and watched my video and said you've got a very sick little rabbit. I just cried not because I was being told she was sick but because he could actually see it. That sounds terrible now that I felt relief being told she's sick but I knew I'd found someone who would help me.

Lordy, just checked back and it was 2008 when the Practice opened  That's 7 flippin' years ago

Sorry Doughnut, we have highjacked your thread

I also remember when you showed me the video. It was beyond belief that any Vet could think that what Doughnut was doing was normal. Can you imagine if someone less persistent than you were told that and just accepted it.

I know. I knew it wasn't normal and she was in pain and I have no experience with rabbits. She stayed at an exotic specialists three days. That's when she had been wet for months. They said she was chinning not rubbing her throat and she was a little wet but had weed and sat in it. I took her back there three times after seeing two ordinary Vets on numerous occasions and felt like a hypochondriac. I did feel embarrassed keep going back but couldn't let it go.

At least I now have a brilliant vet so it's a good ending. I'm not bothered about the money I paid out to the other specialist just feel sad that she had to put up with being in pain so long especially when all her results came back and she was so ill. Marks had so much time with her and because she's unique I think that's why he's got a soft spot for her. He also thinks she's naughty which he likes! All the staff are lovely there though

I doubt that Doughnut would have pulled through if it were not for your determination. She certainly is a special little Bunny

I do find it rather heartbreaking though that we have to go through 'mediocre' or worse vets in order to spot the good one who can pinpoint what's wrong quickly. I have found so many vets I've consulted at a loss on so many occasions. It really hurts me to see my little ones hurting and to be told 'there's nothing to be done" or worse still, "there's nothing wrong"

Thanks. I like to think most people would carry on if they knew their animal is in pain. Since I've never had rabbits before it would be nice to have a healthy one for a few years but I still feel lucky to have her.

At least this forum helps guide people to the right ones. I have a long list of not very good ones!

The noise came back over the weekend and it's got worse. Doughnut is starting on a course of baytril today when I pick it up. She's on 5 meds now, lucky she like most of them. Going to have to mix it with the metacam as I know she'll turn her nose up when I offer her the syringe with baytril in it!

Baytril does taste gross !!

I think it's the only one she won't take, panacur always looks awful but she happily take that. Hopefully the honey of the metacam will disguise it!

I think panacur is virtually tasteless, the liquid form anyway.

Baytril actually smells awful too !!

I think she'll only have a low dose so hopefully with everything else I can mix it in. She had the paste of panacur which reminded me of eating a cream that you would put on your face!

Wish me luck!

Akk! Perhaps injections? Though they aren't without issues too ...

I'm thinking she may only have 0.3ml or something like that. Not sure about antibiotics but I have zantac and metaclop to also mix it with. I guess there's an advantage to her being on constant medicine. She's still so happy bless her.

Good luck!

I have a little man on a cocktail at the moment  And eating it off food is not an option!

Pity it's not septrin as she loves that! I guess that is the next option if baytril doesn't work, I think I read somewhere vets have to start off with baytril, not sure why or maybe I'm talking rubbish :)

She's on baytril 0.5ml once a day for ten days. I mixed it in but she took some them sort of shook her head and refused the rest so mixed in other medicine as well to dilute it more.

Is it a few days before I should see an improvement? I'm a bit impatient!
