  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

GI Stasis *Advice needed*

Took Luna back to the vet yesterday, they felt her belly and said that they don't think there's any discomfort or a blockage so again refused to give her any more pain relief. They had a look at her teeth and said they were good, so we were given more of the gut stimulant and told to see how she goes.

She had some larger poos last night and seemed fairly bright, she even started to eat a few pellets but today she's not herself again. She's refusing to eat anything by herself and hasn't pooed much, she had a very odd jelly like poo earlier?

Our vet isn't an exotics vets so I'm thinking that I might be better off finding a more rabbit experienced vet to take a look (although our normal vets have been quite good in the past)
Can anyone recommend a good vet in the Lincolnshire/ Nottinghamshire area?

Right now she's laid stretched out and not moving much, what would her posture be like if she was in pain?

Rabbit Savvy Vet Recommendations

Passing mucus in poo happens when their is inflammation in the GI tract. I cant understand why the Vet refused to give analgesia, it is a standard part of treatment for gut stasis. Personally I would try to see a more Rabbit Savvy Vet ASAP

I'm really sorry Luna isn't feeling better. Like IM, I'd try to find a rabbit savvy vet as soon as you can, because it doesn't seem like your current vets will give Luna the treatment she needs. The fact that she's not moving much does suggest to me that she's in pain, and she isn't likely to feel like eating when she's in pain, so it's really disappointing and neglectful that they won't give her any pain relief when that's so important. I hope you can find a vet soon for your girl who will do more than just give her gut stimulants. Sending Luna lots and lots of vibes.

Will definitely be ringing around to get her seen asap, I was so frustrated that they wouldn't give her any more pain relief. It's so hard seeing her so uncomfortable, she's such a sweetheart.

I'm sorry to read that Luna has been poorly and you're having such a hard time getting pain meds from the vet. It's very frustrating when vets are so reluctant to prescribe adequate pain relief for stasis episodes as, in my experience, it really does make a huge difference in their recovery.

I hope you manage to get hold of a rabbit savvy vet and that Luna starts to feel better soon.
