Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Casper's at the vets (teeth this time)

The cheek sore should heal quickly once teeth are burred tomorrow. Sending vibes for your double dental and for positive news with a clear x-ray.

Thank you all so much for thinking of us and sending vibes for Casper and Sophie. They're at the vets now and I'm worried... With both of them having dentals today, it feels like there's double the chance of something going wrong. :( I'm trying to remind myself that all their dentals so far have gone well, so they'll likely be fine this time, too...

Its brilliant to hear how well little Casper is managing. Always good when they manage better than expected I'm sorry Sophie is struggling more with nuggets - sounds like good timing for that dental.Do they go in early morning?
Yes, we just dropped them off about an hour ago. They got their breakfast two hours before they normally do and they seemed a bit confused.

Thinking of you today. Double the chance of bringing two healthy bunnies back home too :)

Confused but accepting I bet. J&B had a dental at the same time 2 years ago & I think I was more worried than usual. It makes sense though. I hope you get a call soon to say all has gone well

Thank you, Omi. That's a good point. :)

Definitely accepting. Yeah, it does make sense, I think. And thank you. I've been waiting, but they haven't called yet...

Hope all has gone well
Thank you. I don't know if they've already had their dentals or not... Hopefully they've already had them and they just haven't called yet because everything went well.

I'm sorry you and your bunnies are having a hard time. Have you noticed that a lot of people are having problems with their rabbits this summer? Everyone's bunnies have been sick for the past few months. I'm sending lots of vibrations in your rabbits. Xxxx
Sorry, KCG, I missed your question when I replied earlier. I think it's probably looking like many bunnies are having problems right now because there are a lot of bunnies on the forum and there's always going to be a number of them who aren't well, but I don't have the feeling that more bunnies are unwell right now than usual. Lots of bunnies are doing perfectly fine, thankfully. :) I am very sorry that Cookie isn't one of the ones who are doing fine, though. :(

I hope all goes well for them today. Walli and I are thinking of them and you :)
Aww, thank you both. That's very kind of Walli and you. :)

They're home. They're both already eating hay. The vet nurse who called me about their being ready to be picked up said everything had gone really well. She also said, though, that the new x-ray they took of Casper's skull does show that his molar roots on the bottom are right on the edge of breaking through his jaw, and the upper ones are about to get into his tear ducts, so it wasn't just the blurriness of the previous x-ray making it look that way. :( So, on the way to the vets I decided to ask the vet nurse if it's possible for them to contact the specialist and ask if they have any ideas, or if the pulpectomy would be an option for him (since they can only do it on some of the lower molars and it wouldn't help with the upper ones), but the vet nurse helping me when I picked them up was one I hadn't seen before, and when I brought up Casper's roots she said that the only consequence of the roots being long is that he'll get spurs on those molars more quickly, and that they can't actually go through his jaw, because they only grow upwards. So, I'm very confused now? If that's true, why would the vet I spoke to last week be so grim about Casper's future, and say that when the roots break through he'll get abscesses? Why would the vet and the nurses keep describing them as 'being close to breaking through' if they can't actually break through? :? I'll send the vets a message about it tomorrow, but for now I'm kind of confused and guessing the vet nurse is wrong?

I also think they didn't get any water while they were there, because normally when I pick them up one of the little food/water bowls in their carrier has water in it, but this time it's completely dry, and Sophie spent a long time drinking when she got home. I always stick a note on their carrier asking for some water for them in a bowl (plus any other comments, like what meds they've already had that day), in case they try to give them a bottle (I don't know if they know how they work), so they shouldn't have forgotten. :? The small container of various favourite foods I gave to the vet nurse when I dropped them off was completely untouched as well, so it looks like they didn't even offer them any of it. :? They have hay in their carrier, so they weren't without food, but... This isn't really the level of care I'm used to from them. :?

I'm so glad they are home  The fact that they are both already eating hay must mean that they are feeling fairly comfortable. How frustrating to get that response from the vet nurse though :( Hopefully the situation will be clarified by one of the vets. I'm sorry it also sounds as though the care wasn't up to the usual standard, which is a shame.

Phew! I'm glad your bunnies are back home & already eating hay:love: I've been anxious for a good update. That is disappointing that their care today doesn't seem of its usual standard. Will you raise it with them?As they are normally so good it'd be easier to frame your concerns more positively (a poop sandwich )

Could it be that that the advances of tooth roots can cause all these problems but its not inevitable? I know bunny teeth can stop growing with dental disease as remember FHB saying so - I just wish I remembered more of what she said. I hope you get some clarity on what it all means (or could mean)

Glad they are both home and nibbling on hay. Hope you get some answers from the vet regarding tooth roots.

I'm so glad to hear they're all right now. I hope they get better soon. Xxxxx

I also had the same problem you had at the vet and it's really frustrating.. After all I don't understand why they send it back home without being sure if they're eating or drinking again. I think this is the wrong method.

Thank you. Yes, I think they're feeling pretty okay since they're already eating hay. They both just ate some greens as well. Thank you for caring about the response I got from the vet nurse and the care not being up to their usual standard. I'll see what they say tomorrow.

Aw, thank you. I think I will raise the water issue, at least, yes. If they were without water since this morning, that's quite bad. :? But, yes, I'll frame it in a nice way, since I do appreciate that they're normally good with everything (maybe a bunny poop sandwich?)

That could be the case, I think, yeah... To be fair, when we found out he has these tooth root issues, the vets were quite pessimistic and said he could be in too much pain to eat by himself before too long, and that he'd likely not live to old age, and now here we are, five years later, he's almost 10, and he's still eating really well. So, nothing is inevitable, I think. And I have read that, too, that their teeth can stop growing as dental disease progresses. Considering Casper's still getting spurs, I guess that hasn't happened yet, though now would be a good time for them to stop growing if the alternative is more pain for him.

Thank you, Pets mum. :)

Thank you, too, KCG. :) Yeah, normally my vets make sure they're eating before letting them go home, but I'm not sure they did that this time since they didn't give them any of the food I had packed for them. They might have given them something else to eat, though, as the vet nurse did say they were doing really well, which I assumed to mean that they were eating.

So he was diagnosed 5 years ago, I didn't realise that. Yep - they've clearly underestimated your wonderbun:love:
