Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Casper's at the vets (teeth this time)

It's not looking very good... The vet has examined him and taken x-rays of his belly and his head, and there's not enough movement in his guts, but the real problem is that he has molar spurs and they've damaged his cheek. And the vet said that his molar roots are very close to breaking through his jaw. Last time he had a skull x-ray his roots hadn't gotten any worse, but it seems they've gotten worse now, though the vet did say that since they did the x-ray while Casper was conscious it wasn't completely clear. So, the vet isn't sure if treating his molar spurs will be enough, because he'll be in pain because of those roots as well. He gets Metacam every day for that, but that might not be enough anymore. He did say that pulling those teeth isn't really an option because it's several of them, and it'd be too many, and he said that once they break through his jaw abscesses are waiting to happen. I've known that for years, of course, since he's had this issue for a very long time, and I check his jaws every week for any abscesses, but it sounds like it's closer to happening now. :(

They were going to give him extra meds now, to get his guts going, and extra pain relief, and they're going to syringe feed him, and the vet wants him to be on syringe feed for at least two days before treating his molar spurs so he'll be in better shape. And then we'll see if he'll feel well enough to eat. He'll need time for his cheek to heal, too.

I'm really worried.

Oh no, I am sorry to hear this. It sounds as though you have a very Rabbit Savvy Vet though and I am sure that he/she will do everything possible for Casper. Sending lots of vibes for him x

I'm very sorry too and I can understand why you are concerned. I also agree with Jane, that it sounds as though your vet is very rabbit savvy, so I hope that with her skill and experience, together with your care, a way can be found to help Casper.

Thinking of him and you and sending lots of vibes.

I'm really sorry to hear this, I'm sending so many vibrations for Casper xxxxx

Oh no I am so sorry for you and for Casper :(
I agree with the others, your vet sounds really knowledgeable.

I'm sorry Casper is unwell, lots of vibes the vet can make a plan to help him xx

Thank you so, so much, everyone, for your kindness and thoughts and vibes. I really appreciate your support and your caring about Casper. :love:The vet does seem very rabbit savvy, yeah. We have multiple vets at the practice, and I've not seen this one often, but I saw him a few months back with Sophie (unless I'm mistaken; I'm not good with names and faces), and he was great then. We can pick Casper and Sophie up in an hour and a half, so we'll see how Casper is doing then. He must be unhappy having to be syringe-fed. He's not as bad as Sophie about it, but he definitely doesn't like it. :(

I'm so sorry Casper is having issues with his teeth 😔 As othere have said, it's great that you have a rabbit savvy vet looking after him. I really think that's half the battle.

Hopefully Casper will be feeling a lot better now he's had some meds and feeds at the vet.

Lots of nose rubs for Casper and Sophie xx

Thank you, Scrappy's Little Helper. I agree that having a rabbit savvy vet is so, so valuable.

We picked Casper and Sophie up a little while ago, and they said Casper had been really easy to syringe feed! Then I got my second surprise when I let him out of the carrier and he jumped on his little IKEA bed and immediately started eating hay! He's a lot more active than this morning, and clearly feeling a lot better, so I'm feeling more hopeful now that he'll be okay for a while yet. Hopefully with the help of his meds he will keep eating, and then in a few days he can have his dental and his cheek can start to heal. They mentioned possibly referring him to the specialist vet who treated Tom's dental abscess, who is specialised in bunnies and their teeth (but whose practice is sadly several hours away), to see what they recommend regarding his tooth roots, so I'll talk to the vet about that next time.

He really is a lovely little chap  And of course I am so pleased that he feels a lot better after his treatment at the vets :)

Sending vibes. Glad meds and syringe feeds have him wanting to eat. Perhaps have clearer x ray done to assess his roots when spurs are addressed. I hope his sore heals quickly once spurs are removed.

Aww I'm glad he's munching now they're home!

Sending vibes that he continues to recover ready for his dental x

I'm really pleased he's home and is recovering so well 😀

I've got everything crossed that when they come to do his dental his teeth won't be as bad as the earlier x ray seemed to show. Hopefully it won't come to it but it's great that you have the specialist in rabbit dentistry as a potential ace up your sleeve should you need it.
