Help please! Really scared!!

Hi everyone

Just taken Barney to the vet for his neuter. The vet asked how long I had had Barney and I answered that I picked him up on Sunday.

She told me that she was concerned that he may develop respiratory disease if he had the op so soon beacuse he wasn't settled enough in our home. (I was a bit annoyed this hadn't been explained on the telephone when I booked the appointment as it had been really stressful getting him there).

Anyway, she checked him over, listened to his heart and took his temp. Then she said she thought it would be ok. - I said I would prefer to have it done today but obviously not if he was going to be put at risk. She said there was always more of a risk with rabbits that cats and dogs because of their size but that Barney would be taken to see a rabbit specialist for his op.

The long and short of it is that I left him there. And now I'm sitting at home crapping myself.

Should I have waited? Or am I being silly?

Please help. I'll ring and cancel if there's time.

Jenny

I picked Rowan up on the saturday and had him neutered on Monday, so same time period and the vet didnt mention that...all was fine, Im sure Barney will be ok.

to worry :D ! I'm sure everything will be o.k!
Sending lots of vibes for Barney  ! x

Thanks for your support guys. It's ridiculous! I only got him on Sunday - and yet i feel like a member of my family is having the op! I'll try to calm down now...

we know what you're going through, we've had four done now.
they felt like the longest days ever but everything will be ok.
thinking of you.

Sending lots of luck - am sure he will be fine, but you cant help worrying can you?

Keep busy and 2pm will come round quickly.

Hi

I have never heard anything like that and we have most of our bunnies done quite soon after arriving. The only thing that may be more likely is possibly developing mites which are brought on by stress and if a bunny is prone to them then a move and op in quick sucession can bring on a reoccurence. That said they are easily treated anyway.

Neutering is a very routine operation and you really dont need to worry. :D

Aw, you poor thing. Don't worry too much. Bun is in great hands – at least the vet will be a specialist who knows a rabbit from a moggy!! – and will look after the wee bun well, I'm sure.

It is a very routine op, but I understand your fears. Make it all nice for him when he gets back, get thee a cup of tea and watch some silly TV till you pick him up (or clean the house, which is what I do do get rid of pent up tension). But I am a bit weird like that ;)

Thanks for your responses guys. Feeling calmer as each one arrives!

The vet said that almost all rabbits harbour some sort of respiratory problem and that they are prone to respiratory disease if they become too stressed.

Barney is very jumpy - he's been living in horrible conditions for 6 months and was really nervous when we took him home. I have left him to chill on his own for almost 2 days though (even though the hamster tried to get in his box last night  ) and this morning he ate a carrot from my hand...Now I feel terrible!!

Glad to hear many of you have felt the same way!

Take a carrot with you when you pick him up so he associates you with the tasty orange thingy he had eaten. I dunno, they react to smells, don't they? It may add to his feeling of familiarity when he sees you again.

Wishing you well,
M

I think its pasteurella your vet is referring to, most rabbits have it but few show any signs or develope an illness from it.....I guess stress may make it more likely but I would think it was a very small risk, most peoiple on here have very rabbit savvy vets and if they havnt been warned about it I would suggest the risk is miniscule.

Thanks for the great suggestions. Going to sort his pad out... will keep me busy. Just pacing the flat - Had about 10 cups of tea! Pathetic

Will keep you all posted...

I got Athena and had her spayed about 2 days later, I had Cosmos booked in a day after I got him and I even had my dog done within a week of adopting him.

You're right Sooz. I've just read up about Pasteurella and while doing so remembered that the vet said she thought Barney had the 'snuffles' - didn't realise this was a term used to describe it.

Any idea how I can tell how bad it is? Watching him yesterday he sat for about 30 mins breathing strangely - head moving slightly with every breath. I thought I'd monitor it and see what happened. The vet diagnosed the 'snuffles' because he had a bit of goo in his eye.

BTW - just had phone call from vet. Barney is coming round from anesthetic and all has gone smoothly apparently... Still not very relaxed but good news!

Thanks for all advise and support!
