  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I need your help.

Ok, Goregous has been ill for a long time now, with no pooping for about ten days! (we had mucusy diarhea(sp?) but that was it. The vets have given him everything they can and waited long enough for each to work. We're at the point now where there is nothing left to do. He's comign home tommorow morning for the day to see if he will relax and 'go poopy' if not, we're out of options. The vet won't opperate as he is still quite spritly and I don't want him living in discomfort. What do I do?
Shall I ask for him to be pts, or wait util he goes downhill (as it will have to happen eventually) or will waiting just mean he is suffering longer?
Could a miracle happen and he might just emoty his bowels one day?
I don't know if he is uncomfortable at the moment as he's on pain relief, but surely we can't just keep him doped up for the rest of his life?
Help, I really don't know what to do for the best!

Raven have your vets checked to see wether the nerves to Georgous' stomach are working?? One of my bunnies milly had to be PTs a few weeks back because of key Gaskell Syndrome, she was livley and eating but getting thinner and not passing anything, this was because the nerves to her stomach had stopped working so food couldn't be passed through. It's just a thought

How do they test for that hun? They said nothing was coming out because he has gas pockets in his intestines. But it would be worth checking it's not this.

Am I correct in thinking your Vet has diagnosed 'Ileus'?

Here is a link about it:

http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/GI_diseases/Differential/generalities_ileus.htm

As you can see there are various causes, bacterial, fungal, structural, neoplasmic (cancers).......

Has your Vet explained what was shown on the X-ray? What part of the guts is full of gas? The stomach? The colon?

Has your Vet contacted Bristol Rabbit Clinc? They give telephone advice to Vets with 'tricky' cases.

The only thing to do is open him up and test the nerves, i think it can be done fairly simply once the stomach id open. Im sorry i can't think of anything else raven that could possibly cause him to eat but not poop, this is excactly the same as milly, even after we discovered the problem she could have lived but it wouldn't have been for long as she wasn't getting any nutrition.

The vets have diagnosed illeus and said his guts were shutting down, apparently there are several other rabbits in the vets over the weekend, and Gorgeou looks the best out of all of them, though he's the illest!
I haven't seen the xray, but apparently the gas pockets were in the intestines, not sure where I haven't been in to see the vet so will do tommorow. Mainly it's been phone updates.
They're thiking a virus caused it, though that doesn't really mean anything to me as viruses are what doctors say to people when they can't find anything wrong!

If he were my Bun I would ask the Vet treating him to seek SPECIALIST advice from Bristol. If the Vet takes offence then I am affraid its tough luck. You are a fee paying client and have the right to ask for a specialists opinion. A GOOD Vet is one who acknowledges when they are out of their depth and will readily accept specialist advice. A BAD Vet is one who is more concerned about 'being right' or being seen to 'know EVERYTHING'.......
Poor Gorgeous :(

I agree with Jane - if your vet doesn't feel that they are able to do anything more, it's time to get a second opinion - and the Bristol rabbit clinic would seem the logical place to start! If the life of your rabbit is at risk, I think you really need to insist, and if they won't - then I'd take him elsewhere!

When my Sunny was eight weeks old, he had very severe GI stasis. He only ever passed anything when I massaged his tummy gently which was every 2 hours. And all he passed for over a week was very runny diarrhea. But I kept going with syringe feeding and tummy rubs and he suddenly started eating again after well over a week.

He is now a 6 1/2 year old bunny that is fit and healthy! So I guess there is a chance if you keep going, as long as your bunny is not in pain.

I'm not sure if he is in pain as he's on drugs, but I would assume he would be without them, this is probably tmi, but I have IBS and I know I can be in a lot of pain from not going for a couple of days so I can't imagine not going for as many as him! I will get the vet to ring Bristol as it can't do any harm, it's just getting ot the point now where there's nothing new to suggest, it's very sad. The vets are still amased at how perky he is, he's a bit of a star attraction to the vets who are all checking on him, trying to work out why he's so well.
All I ask is that he either gets better or we know when it's time to pts, that's the problem with him being so well in himself.

When teegra had GI i was recommended to do tummy rubs for about 10 minutes at a time. he seemed to really enjoy it and you could see him relaxing i could hear his tummy gurgle a little i put him back in his cage (after 10 minutes) and with in about 15 minutes he had done a few little poops. I gave him tummy rubs the other day aswell when he seemed a little uncomfortable (after wolfing down his veg) i dont know if he had wind (there was a terrible smell but not sure if it was him or the dog! - i thought he must have pooped on my lap!!)
it does seem to help though so it might be worth a try

hope Gorgeous is feelinf better soon
