  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help please poorly bun

Even though the surgery has probably now closed, what you have described is a veterinary emergency and the best thing you can do is get him to the vet ASAP. The vet will probably give him an injection to get his gut going again and some painkiller, and this should hopefully be enough to get him all working again. Unlike cats and dogs who can usually wait until morning, sadly poorly bunnies that stop eating and go all quiet tend to go downhill very quickly without veterinary intervention, so tomorrow may not be soon enough. If it's a simple case of tummy pain (often caused by trapped wind) then the drugs your vet can give can disperse it and he should be right as rain very soon.

Hope your bunny picks up very soon!

Hello
If Skippy appears to be poorly you really need to get him to a Vet this evening. Bunnies can go downhill very quickly.
Skippy might have a tummy ache (has he produced the normal amount of poops today? Has he eaten anything different from normal?) or maybe pain some-where else. Whatever, he needs to be examined by your Vet.
Please keep us posted as to how he is.

thanks for the info he doesnt seem to have produced as many poops as usual, he was in the garden yesterday we are wondering if he ate a plant that was bad for him?

I think Skippy needs to see a Vet tonight.
Then he can get the treatment he needs to help him feel better.
The treatment is likely to be pain relief and medication to speed up how his guts work. He may also need some fluid therapy. All these need to be administered by a Vet and the sooner the better.

Sounds exactly like the problems I've had with my 2. :( Hope the vet is able to help Skippy. Let us know how you get on.

Just to say a big thanks to everyone who responded after a visit to the emergency vets last night we have a very healthy bun again. Really strange what caused it, but we are just happy that he is well again.

Phewww! Glad everything is ok. Sometimes bunnies can get trapped wind (bloat) which sounds really trivial but is actually rather serious for a bun as it causes them immense pain and can stop their guts from working. The vet can administer painkillers and something to help the wind pass through easily - which is probably why your bun picked up so well. Hopefully it was just a one-off, these things do seem to happen from time to time for no apparent reason!! Sometimes it's because they have eaten something different (e.g. broccoli and cabbage seem to give some prone bunnies wind) and sometimes there doesn't seem to be any reason.

Glad your bun is better today :D

interesting you mention cabbage and broccoli causing wind as it is two of his favourite veg and he had both in the morning.
Perhaps we will have to be careful of his intake of these veg.
thanks
