  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

manuka honey

YES!! Loads of times. Its very good. But it does cause abscesses to close over quickly so you have to be vigilant that this doesn't happen by flushing the abscess with sterile saline solution a couple of times a day then re-applying some Manuka Honey. Oh yes, if you dont warn other household members what the honey is being used for you may find some poor unsuspecting soul puts it on their toast.  As happened with my Ex, Mal!!......   (That's not why he's my Ex though   ) Jane and Buns xx

I've seen it in the 'finest' range in Sainsburys. Don't know if it has to be a particular type though, maybe you can get it in health food shops?

I would just go with the neat honey rather then a formulated product - as these products are made for human skincare I wouldn't want to risk 'testing' it on bunnies just in case there are other ingredients within the product.

manuka honey is the best honey to help with absesses as it flushes the rubbish out aswell. Other honey can be good aswell but this ones the best I use it for my rabbits. It was quite expensive tho but worth it

I got mine from Tesco.
I used it on Sunshine's abcess on his side. I think it helped. It cleared quickly anyway, but it wasn't deep.

Marie, you can buy it from Janes Health Foods, Rushtons Yard, Ashby de la Zouch. She has it from UMF factor 10 upwards and price starts at £5.49 a jar :D
