Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sneezing...causes?

Hey everyone,

I took Xena to the vet today as she's been sneezing a bit over the last week and I wanted to check she wasn't developing a pasturella infection or anything. The vet and I had a chat about it and he checked her out fully and couldn't find anything, which was good.

We are still keeping an eye on her, of course, and I'm to call again by the end of next week and report on how she's doing, even if she's better (which makes me like the vet even more). He and I both thought that the possibility of an allergy was probably minute, but if she doesn't develop any discharge (she's currently bright, no discharge from eyes or nose, clear lung sounds, good pulse, eating and drinking loads) we might put her on some antihistamines...

Anyone else have any experience with this? An non Snuffles sneezing bunny?

I am having the same problem!
Indie is a 3 month old dwarf lop and just two weeks ago she started sneezing. There are no signs of anything being wrong and she's fine in herself doing her funky bunny jumps and chasing my partner round the house.
The vet doesn't know what to suggest and has even taken blood samples to test which have not shed any light onto the situation. I do find she sneezes more when she gets excited or warn out from running around and we clean her out fully every two days (we do clean her litter tray out everyday) and on the second day she sneezes sometimes 9 times in a row and then nothing?
Is there anything similar to yours here?
If you find out any more please keep me posted I’d be so grateful to know

Good luck and love to your bunny xxx

Have they checked for a foreign body with yuor bun? If she does it when excited, it could be a foreign body.

The vet checked for it with Xena but thought it unlikely...

I'll keep you posted.

I _think_ dust can make them sneeze? If they just sneeze once and a while that might be it. But if it is usual, then I don't know, maybe tooth problems?

I used a different type of hay to what I usually use a couple of weeks ago and 2 of mine kept sneezing. I changed back to my normal hay and it all stopped! Have you changed your hay supply at all?

My vet seems a bit wet behind the ears. I might take her to another for a second opinion.
Foreign Body? My vet never mentioned this while he was checking her over could you possibly tell me a little more about it?
He said her teeth were fine and straight and she has lots to gnaw on which she's uses regularly.
My partner said it my be due to us having a fur rug and fur blanket in the front room, they have vary fine fluff that they moult at a touch and being a rug gets stuck to our feet and tread across the floor, could this be getting stuck to her nose when she sniffs and snuffles around irritating her into sneezing maybe?

I don’t know but I think a second vet opinion in my case is a good idea.

Fern had many bouts of sneezing throughout her life - causes ranged from allergy (new hay, new blankets, we moved house and lots of dust got kicked up....etc), pasteurella infection, strep infection and her teeth. If I'm honest, mostly her teeth. Plus the infections were probably cos of her teeth too.

Did your vet look at your buns teeth? I mean properly look at the ones at the back, not just a quick look at the front.

Also, did he feel along the bottom of your buns jaw? This can give them an idea if the teeth ate growing wrongly, and then they can x-ray if they think theres something not right.

Its best to rule this out too. Lee-Sian where are you? someone might be able to recommend a good vet for you to get another opinion.

Yup, a full tooth check was done, nothing could be seen.

As for foreign bodies, sometimes they can sniff something up into their nasal cavities. However, you'd expect some discharge with this.

Will keep an eye on her and will see what happens. I have a feeling it might be the hay so will keep an eye on that and switch things around...

Thanks everyone!

Ahh you live right by me ;)!

Is that vets the one in Thatcham?

There is a specialist in Andover about 45min drive from you, Mr Chitty @ Strathmore Vet Clinic (quicker to cut through Kingsclere and go across that way to the A303). You may have to get a referral from your vets first though (otherwise it puts him in an akward position).

I had two bunnies with sneezes.

One turned out be an abcess in a really unusal place but he had other symptoms like trouble breathing, chewing and swallowing. The other (Zeus) turned out to be teeth problems which was only diagnosed with x-rays.

I have heard of bunnies with allergies and also mine sometimes sneeze after I have been dusting so it is possible it is just something getting up her nose. How often is she sneezing - if it is everyday then it could be something more serious.

It's really random, Caz, and she's actually not done it for well over a day now, so I'm not too worried anymore. I have a feeling it was the hay, or maybe even the hair from Chris's new baby, Nala. Who knows. I think it's over, though...*phew*

Yeah Zeus' was every day often a couple of times he would have these sneezing fits lasting ages. Since his jabs he as had the odd sneeze and the vet told me on Tuesday to stop panicking as these were probably just dust sneezes because it looks like the infection is nearly cleared.

I sometimes wonder if he knows I come running when he does it and just wants some attention ;) !

Ted has sneezed ever since I have had him. I racked my brains for ages wondering why he did it. There was no discharge, no foreign body, nothing. He's in good health. Eating, drinking, popping and playing like normal. He's on dust free bedding and I don’t give any hay that is dusty He gets lots of fresh air as we keep our windows open.. I've removed everything in my house that may of caused an allergy. All this to no avail and he still sneeze’s.

He's been to the Vet's. They couldn't find anything wrong

I've come to the conclusion its just him.

Stroppy also sneezes every now and again but like Ted there is nothing physically wrong with him.

Well for the last 2 days I have heard nothing, not a sniff!
I don't know what to think now?
She would have sneezing fits of about 10 in a row then just 2 or 3 here and there but I’ve been home all day since Wednesday and she's not sneezed once.

Thank you for the vet advice Caz, I was using the Thatcham Vets one behind Alldays as it had an appointment sooner then the Big O’gorman one near Shaw (which I prefer to use). But I look into the transfer for the one you suggested?
I'd just like to put my mind at rest really.
