  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

dental reoccurance

hello all

I cant find my old thread from while ago, so a new thread sorry!

Pearl was speyed earlier this year, and at same time had spurs burred down as vet noticed they were there. Then 11 wks later she had to have another dental.

Now 9 weeks since last dental she is showing signs again - she is booked in next week.

She is fed the small amount of SS pellets, and free fed good stalky hay, a handful of readi grass daily and no fresh food (her mate cant cope with veg)

She is a mini lop so the squashed face doesnt help, just want to see if there is anything else I can do or get checked out to see how to increase the time between dentals!??

Unfortunately it seems you are doing what you can for her. Some buns have genetic problems, their teeth may not meet up properly. No matter how much hay or good food they get their teeth will eventually elongate and grow spurs. Making sure she eats lots of hay will certainly extend the time between dentals, fresh grass and forage are good, too. :thumb:

What would help is the vet not only burring down the spurs, but actually grinding the teeth down almost to the gum line. It *may* help the teeth to grow in a way which is more conducive to hay grinding. If teeth grow wonky it's doubtful you'll be able to correct them, though by the vet grinding the teeth low you may be able to extend the period between dentals.

I don't remember who it was, but another RU member has a bun that was having frequent dentals, I think every couple months. They switched their bun to orchard grass hay(high in silica so helps with tooth wear) and I think it's been several more months since their bun needed another dental, if the bun has even needed another yet. Hopefully they'll come along and tell the details themselves.

Stalky isn't always the best for tooth wear, sometimes you want leafy because the leafy bits are rougher - it just depends on the hay. The test is how much your finger catches as you run it down a piece or how well it catches on clothing and gets spread around the house
