  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mimzy's lump-all clear post #38 :D

MimzMum

Wise Old Thumper
While cleaning out his pen tonight I lifted him into his 'waiting box'. As usual he gave me his routine foot flicks and attitude so I gave him a good fluff up and while I was ruffling his fur I felt that the skin on his left side behind his shoulder felt odd. I compared it to the skin on the right and the left side definitely has a thickening in it. I'm guessing it could be a fatty lump I may not have noticed before but his vet gave him a good feel last month and didn't mention it and I'm almost positive it wasn't there even yesterday because it is making his skin sag and look like he's just had sub q fluids fall down into his armpit.
Something coming up that quickly then screams abscess to me. :(

He just finished his month long course of baytril for chest infection this last week.

Will call vet first thing tomorrow to get him in but would like input first. The lump is not hard like a tumor, I've felt those and am at least 90% sure this isn't one. It doesn't appear attached to anything under the skin layer like bone or muscle but he did flinch as I touched his shoulders. That's what led me to investigate further in the first place. It also feels pliable in itself so I did my best not to squeeze too hard in case it's an abscess...but it's really odd feeling whatever it is. It's also about half the size of my pinky finger and at least as big around.
:(

Could really use some advice here. He seems normal in other aspects except that I thought he looked a bit "rough" this afternoon but since it was a bit cold in the house at that time I put it down to that.

Not a happy bunny this evening, me. I doubt I'll sleep much thinking about it.

I don't know what to say other than I hope it is something that can be treated quickly and easily. If he has had a chest infection he could be run down and abscesses can appear at times like this.

Sending you hugs and nose rubs for Mimzy xxx

Thanks everyone. I'm really trying not to panic but it's hard.
Amy, no he's had no injections of any kind. Rabbits need no inoculations in America and he's been given nothing else by needle.

My poor boy...he's been through enough in his almost eight years. And of course the likelihood that his good vet will be on this weekend is slim. :(

Thank you, Rabcat. Yes that is what worries me. I really hope it's not an abscess but what else would come on that quickly? All I can hope for is encapsulation and easy removal and if so it's in a good place for it at least.

I hope it's nothing more serious than this and that it is easily removed/dealt with.

Thanks again, everyone. I just phoned the vet office and his vet is there tomorrow and Sunday but she's booked solid. :( She's got a note to call me when she has a moment to see if we can squeeze him in between appointments.
Just relating why he was coming in to the receptionist and I could hear my voice quivering. When I hung up I lost it.
Please God...let it be something simple...not for my sake but for his. He's just a wee bunny...:cry::cry:

Awwwww so sorry sweetheart and sending you a massive hug xxxxxx

Sending big smoochy nose rubs for little man xxxx

Could he have had a fall, or bumped into anything?

Sorry, that's really not much help, but it's the only experience I have. Bubs suddenly got a lump which even my usual vet thought was cancer and they would operate. A few days later, it started to go down itself. Took him to a specialist and they thought it was an injury.

Sending lots of vibes for him, and (((hugs))) for you x
