  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Homoeopathy

Has anyone's buns been treated with this? We have a Vet who is very enthusiastic about Homoeopathic Remedies. He says he has 70% success.

We used to have a homeopathic vet but she only used it along side the usual meds

I know there are people who swear by homeopathy. But please don't rely on it. It is not scientifically tested. It is a pseudoscience. Any testing that is quoted are when people have generally very small sample sizes and unreliable methods eg. No control group. Its basically mixing a chemical that causes similar symptoms to the illness with a ton of water. To the point of which when you test it its literally just water. If you do use it, use alongside conventional medicine. With humans its always used to cure illnesses that clear up by themselves ie. Colds -so very hard to "prove" they work.

This, exactly! I suspect in humans it has a placebo effect so can be helpful but animals won't experience this effect.

There has actually been at least one study done on the placebo effect in animals... it does happen, something to do with feedback from the owner or something. I can't remember off the top of my head but I think it was Ben Goldacre who talked about it years ago.

I don't do homeopathy personally, for me or my animals.

I don't know about rabbits but I've had several of my dogs and cats treated by a homeopathic vet with good results and my third german shepherd who had multiple life long illnesses we were able to reduce the amount of medication he was on.

I too would be interested I use homeopathy on myself and my dogs. I have never used it on my buns though.
