  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit with erratic heart rate

halfpenny

Wise Old Thumper
Shamrock, one of our older rabbits, about 6-7 years old, has been losing weight, while still having a large tummy.
The vet checked him over yesterday and I thought we were going to lose him. He was getting his teeth checked and he started to breathe very heavily. When we put him back in his run ( the vet was at us so checks were done at home) he pretty much collapsed. The vet checked his heart and it was going very slowly and then very quickly. He did have a bit of a respiratory infection a month ago but it cleared up with meds and his breathing has been ok until yesterday. The vet is off to research what to do, and proactively we’ve started him on antibiotics again.
Has anybody any experience of this and any idea of treatments?

Inspector Morse and Colonel Colin both developed cardiac arrhythmia. Various diagnostics including an ecg, and an U/S of the heart are needed as treatment depends on the exact cause.

Oh halfpenny, how scary. :( Sending loads of vibes for Shamrock. I hope something can be done to help. xxxx
