  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Swollen testicles

My 4 year old male lionhead has enlarged testicles. He hasn't eaten his pellets tonight and we noticed he had a 'smelly' botty. He had some soft poo stuck to him so I washed the bottom area and thats when I noticed his testicles are really big, like tight plums. They are normal colour not red. I will take him to vet in morning but any clues anyone please? thanks

Sorry, I haven't seen anything like that as both my boys were neutered straight away when I got them..sounds like a possible infection if they are really swollen. Best get him to a vet asap as it is possible an infection could be causing him pain, hence why he is off his food. When was the last time he ate any food? try to keep him eating something to prevent him going into stasis.

Roger had this and took him to the vets straight away as assummed it was an infection, but turned out to be a hernia and he needed emergency surgery and was castrated at the same time. Of course I'm not saying this is what your bun has got, but when I was cuddling Roger who was a 'special needs' bun, I noticed his testi's were REALLY swollen, and I remember thinking what a good job it was he was a house bun, because if he had been outside, I might not have noticed it. It became an emergency because my vet said, because of the location of the hernia, if it ruptured, it would have strangulated his bowel and caused a slow, painful death, so definately good idea to go to vets asap just in case.
