Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

'Horn' on rabbit's penis

Oh, I see! I really hope it won't grow back, poor boy. I hope the specialist vet can figure out what it was. Did your current vets give you what they removed so you can show it to the specialist? I hope so. And that's great that he's eating again and had a wee, too! Sending him lots more vibes.

Thankyou, no sadly they didn't as they said it had all broken up on removal which sounds more like bedding than hair!

My vet would definitely have checked it under a microscope as a basic step and out of curiosity. They don't need much sample for that, and it's easy to tell if it's animal or vegetable in origin. It has huge implications for your rabbit. A bit of hay is a freak accident. A growth of any kind is likely to need further investigation.

I hope you get some answers on Monday.

I'm unsure how they checked it but came to the conclusion that they weren't 100% sure of it's origin thats why they want me to see the other vet on Monday.

I know, me too. He's wet on his legs and tail again this morning but I think he's too swollen and wobbly to adopt the correct position to urinate at present.
My gut feeling all along was that it was bedding rather than hair due to the colour and it just looked too thick for hair. I think the vets themselves know he needs more specialist treatment and the two vets who operated yesterday weren't the ones who diagnosed idiopathic urinary incontinence on a whim and put him on propalin syrup and were surprised it had been missed. They had also contacted a specialist vet who has recently retired from the team for more advice prior to his surgery.

Thankyou, I'll keep you posted

At least the original Vets seems to have acknowledged their limitations, which is good. I have far more respect for a Vet who will say ‘I don’t know, I advise you seek the opinion of a Specialist/more Rabbit Savvy Vet’ than one who just makes a guess and hopes for the best because they don’t want to appear to not know the answer. I am sure that you will feel more reassured after Monday’s appointment and your poor boy will soon be feeling more comfortable.

Is he eating and pooping OK ? It’s important to make sure his GI tract motility does not slow down due to the stress and discomfort he is currently experiencing.

As he is still getting urine soiled you will also need to be super vigilant re fly strike. Thankfully it’s not been too bad for blow flies yet, due to the weather. But it’s going to be warmer and drier next week, so no doubt the blow flies will wake up.

Yes, eating fine now. Was slow to eat at first but he's eating plenty now and is weeing and pooping.

Thankfully he is an indoor rabbit and the door to the garden is kept shut to hopefully prevent flies coming in. Its really quite cold here so hopefully we have a little more time without flies

Great, you are doing a brilliant job making sure that he gets all the help he needs. :)

I am glad he is weeing and made some droppings, though it is disappointing the offending item broke off before it could be entirely removed and he is wet again.
He must be more comfortable with the Loxicam and antibiotics are a good call in case he has a UTI.
Sending him lots of vibes.

More well wishes for your boy. I hope tomorrows appointment goes well & in the interim his swelling goes down and he feels more comfy. Its great he feel likes eating

I think the vets were thinking it may have broken off and couldn't be sure they had it all as he became too inflamed for them to continue looking 😔.
He attempted to adopt the urinating posture earlier which I havent seen him do in weeks! 👏 I saw him flinch a bit so he must be sore down there, bless him, so I'm hoping it's just too early to tell🤞

Thankyou 🙂

Hi all, just a quick update on Billy's appointment at the more specialist vet.
The vet took a look at his penis which was very swollen and sore looking 😔. More so than before the removed the bedding/hair! He also checked his spine and said he has some tender spots which may be causing him some pain and reduced range of motion. He's put him on some gabapentin for the next two weeks to control pain (alongside the Loxicom and antibiotics he already has) and see if it results in Billy Bumper resuming the correct urinating posture. He's asked me to encourage more exercise to get any bladder sludge moving too. If this hasn't worked after a couple of weeks he wants to get some xrays.
With his penis being so swollen I'm not surprised Billy's not weeing correctly at present. That said he doesnt seem to be dribbling like he was, so I'm still hopeful🤞

Thanks everyone 🙂 x

Sending more positive vibes that your boy will improve quickly. It sounds very uncomfortable, so I am glad he has extra pain medication too.

I hope that the swelling will resolve soon. It must be so sore for him. I am glad that you are now seeing a more Rabbit Savvy Vet. Hope the Gabapentin is of some benefit regarding his spinal discomfort. If the spinal problem becomes a chronic issues you might want to ask the Vet if they offer Laser Therapy as a complementary treatment alongside analgesia. It has been beneficial for some of my arthritic Rabbits. I use it for myself too. Acupuncture is another complementary therapy that can be beneficial for some chronic pain conditions, although not all Rabbits will tolerate it. Also, not all Vets support its use. It’s just another option to bear in mind :)

Perhaps giving extra fluids would dilute his pee and cause him less irritation until the swelling subsides? Having him pee more may also help to flush bacteria or sludge.
Others may be able to suggest a cream you can apply to soothe his inflamed area, I know some are not bunny safe. Sending more vibes.

I posted a couple of days ago about my neutered male rabbit having urinary issues. He has been prescribed Propalin syrup but this hasn't helped. He is due back at the vets on Saturday for further tests. Tonight my partner and I were washing him and noticed a yellowish 'horn' on his penis. It isn't emerging from his urethra but I'm wondering if there is something going on with his genitals that is causing the urinary issues. I will attempt to post a picture but I'm new to this site so unsure if it will work. Could this be a cutaneous horn? Has anyone else seen anything similar in their rabbits? Thanks

Only just seen this thread but, years ago, my rabbit had similar on her genitals and it was Vent disease.

Hope he improves very soon xxx
