'Horn' on rabbit's penis

So sorry to hear about your bunnys problem, I really hope he gets on better at the new vets on Monday. Good luck and please let us know how he gets on.

So I took my rabbit to the usual vet today and the vet thinks it was some sort of bedding material or hay stuck in my rabbit's penis 😫. She tried to remove it with tweezers, it did move a bit but she was concerned that whatever it was was thicker inside and would cause damage so they decided to remove under anaesthetic.
They managed to remove a piece that was about half a cm long but couldn't tell if they'd got it all as his penis became too swollen to tell. They scanned his bladder and found nothing untoward. He's home now and has been given antibiotics and loxicom. They've encouraged me to see the more specialist vet on Monday for further tests if they think it's necessary. I'm really praying this was the cause of his urinary incontinence. Thanks everyone for your support and advice 🙂 x

Oh poor little bunny, that must have been uncomfortable for him. So pleased that the vet has managed to remove it. I really hope he heals quickly now, and has no more problems. Sending lots of vibes for your brave boy xx

I know bless him! It's a bit too soon to tell if it's solved his issues but he neede it out ASAP! They cleaned him up for surgery so I guess we'll know shortly if the incontinence is still an issue. Thanks for your well wishes 🙂 working on getting him eating again now xx

I'm glad they managed to remove it, or at least the part they could see, and that they found nothing wrong with his bladder. I have to say, it doesn't look like hay or a piece of bedding to me on the photo? But I'm glad that whatever it was is (mostly) gone now. I really hope he can pee normally now, and that the specialist vet can take a look and see if everything's really gone. Sending him so, so many vibes, and I hope he'll feel like eating soon.

Poor man, that must have been so sore. I do hope the Vet gave you analgesia and antibiotics to give him over the weekend until you see the more specialist Vet on Monday. Personally I would keep that appointment regardless, just for peace of mind.

They weren't 100% sure it was hay and thought maybe hair growth which would be more worrying as it could grow back, that's why they want him checked further at a more specialist vet. He's migrated from grated apple and carrot to dill, Coriander pak choi and a bit of hay so I'm glad he's eating again. No wee yet but also no leaking so I'm so so hoping he's better! Thanks for your kind words and thoughts 🙂 x

I know, bless him 😔 Yes he's had loxicom and antibiotics and I've got more to give him until Monday. Yes, I am keen to go just to understand their thoughts on it. My vet today wasn't sure if what she removed was hair or bedding. I'm hoping the latter really. Thanks for your help and support 🙂 x

Sending vibes he will be eating and drinking more and the swelling will subside enough for him to give you some wee soon. It is important that he wees.
I do not understand why vet did not put removed material under microscope to see if it was hair or bedding.

Hi bunny momma just checked him and he's eaten plenty and had a wee and a few droppings. No I asked if they were sending the material for testing but they said there wasn't enough of it. I'm hoping, once the swelling subsides, we'll know if it was the cause of his issues 🙏 x

I think I will feel more reassured when the more experienced Vet sees him on Monday. I would rather pay them for any further treatment or diagnostics. Not sure I would feel able to trust the initial Vet any more. To be honest I was a bit :? when I read that they were not sure if what they removed was a bit of hair or a bit of hay !

All the best for Monday’s appointment.

Oh, I see! I really hope it won't grow back, poor boy. I hope the specialist vet can figure out what it was. Did your current vets give you what they removed so you can show it to the specialist? I hope so. And that's great that he's eating again and had a wee, too! Sending him lots more vibes.

My vet would definitely have checked it under a microscope as a basic step and out of curiosity. They don't need much sample for that, and it's easy to tell if it's animal or vegetable in origin. It has huge implications for your rabbit. A bit of hay is a freak accident. A growth of any kind is likely to need further investigation.

I hope you get some answers on Monday.

I know, me too. He's wet on his legs and tail again this morning but I think he's too swollen and wobbly to adopt the correct position to urinate at present.
My gut feeling all along was that it was bedding rather than hair due to the colour and it just looked too thick for hair. I think the vets themselves know he needs more specialist treatment and the two vets who operated yesterday weren't the ones who diagnosed idiopathic urinary incontinence on a whim and put him on propalin syrup and were surprised it had been missed. They had also contacted a specialist vet who has recently retired from the team for more advice prior to his surgery.

Thankyou, I'll keep you posted
