Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Harvest mites

Has any one had any experience of harvest mites (or chiggers as we call them round here)?

We live in an area that's covered with them and we've all noticed the bite marks on us that have been itching like mad. Today I noticed Flop has a clump of orange at the corner of his eye (think looks like pollen) and I know from experience that it's a group of harvest mites.

My bridge bun smudge had a similar problem a few years ago and the vet just tried to remove as many as possible with damp cotton wool (which I've done with Flop, but can't get them all off). I *think* she may have given smudge some shampoo too, but I can't remember and I'm wondering how effective shampoo would be when it's near his eye that seems the worst.

I've had a poke through his & Brambles fur and can't see any more clusters of mites and he doesn't seem to be scratching, so as he doesn't travel well I'm reluctant to take him to the vets if I can avoid it. Anyone any ideas? before I do give up and get an appointment at the vets?
