Post-dental runny eyes

Hi everyone

Last year, I had Poppy spayed and she had a dental at the same time and although a bit dopey for a day she was fine.

Yesterday, she had a dental. Since then, I've had her and Fudge inside and she's just been sleeping non stop and both of her eyes are really runny, the left one in particular. She's eating and from what i can tell pooing and is hopping about but is still sleeping loads and her eyes are really runny. She's been given 1ml metacam twice a day for 5 days, had her first dose this morning. I've bathed her eyes. Not really sure what else I can do.

Is it normal for her eyes to be like this post-dental?

when you say dewntal what did she have done? molar spurs grinded down inscisors cut or removed? it is unusal for teh eyes to run due to this i would bathe the eyes and keep her warm as anestetic can make temperature fall.... i can only think if the tooth roots are pushing up htis can cause the eyes to water but would mean extraction of the incisors to be done this could only be confirmed with an x ray .

Sorry, she had spurs filed down on her left teeth and the vet said the back teeth had started to stagger (is this the right word??) so they were filed down to the same size.

Very worried about her!

i would contact your vet and find out it could be an unrelated infection such as conjunctivitus that jsut needs antibiotics your vest bet for diagnosis is the vet xx

My bridge bun Goofball has the same issue. Turns out the vet put some liquid in the eyes, I can't remember what the reason is. But if you still see it in the 48th hr., I would call your vet

Does everyone agree that i should wait 48 hours?

Also, if the metacam says morning and evening...what time in the evening are we talking??

Karen

Hi, I would phone the vet this morning and see what they say - especially if they were not like this before she had her op. See what they say.

have tried to ring the vets but they closed at 11...

not sure what to do...

one more question: could someone answer what time is best to give the second dose of metacam this evening? early evening..late??

Karen

If, your bunny is not showing any signs of pain then I would give it before you go to bed so he has the full night. If showing signs of pain then about 12 hours after the morning dose if you have just been told to give it twice a day.

When my bridge bun had bone cancer, I only gave metacam once a day.

The formula for dosage (in ml ) = weight (in KG) x 0.1 / 1.5

Say if your bun weighs 2 KG, then dosage = 0.13 ml every 24 hr.

You give metacam from the time she was last given metacam from the post dental surgery. And this is a problem that I have also, i.e., my vet asst. wouldn't tell me when metacam was last given, as they don't know or it wasn't on the notes.

So you have to ask your vet or for the time being, give it a best guess, for e.g.:

If surgery was done at 2:30 pm, then metacam would very most likely be given just after 2:30 pm by injection, and thus, she doesn't need any metacam until 2:30 pm the next afternoon.

I need to remind you if metacam is overdose, it can kill your bun w/i 3 hr. 1 of the forum members told me her inexperience vet told her to give 1.2 ml of metacam to her bun (about 2 KG), 3 hr. after it was given, her bun paralyze and passed away.

Are there any other vets near to you that are still open to ask for their advice. Have sent you a PM.

It's not unusual for a rabbits eye to discharge post-op, especially after a dental. When under GA the vets usually put drops in the eyes to keep them moist but it is possible for them to become dry or irritated by foreign bodies whilst the rabbit is unconscious.

During a dental the tooth roots can sometimes be moved or irritated and as they sometimes run close to the tearducts that can also cause inflammation in the eyes.

Mack had his incisors removed yesterday and his left eye is discharging badly today, he has had problems with it before and the dental has set it off again.

Is the discharge clear and is your bun on any medication post-op?

Metacam says once a day on it, however, if the dose has been split or something, then I would suggest doing it 12 hours apart.

As for the op, all of mine who have had anaesthetics have come home having had some something put in their eyes to keep them moist during the operation. This normally goes as their start to clean, so I would suggest bathing, and then get checked out if it doesn't improve. Some of my buns come back looking a state due to it, but once they clean it, it's fine. Maybe her eyes had some sort of reaction to it if they are watering?

its written on the prescription box to give 1ml twice a day once in morning once in evening starting from saturday morning.

my vet specialises in rabbit medicine so i trust her prescription.

i gave her first dose at 9am...when should i give the second dose do you think??

she's hopping about loads more now and eating tonnes

Like I said, I would give it 12 hours after the first. So it's spread evenly throughout the day :)

am worried now with people saying about metacam overdose etc.

am just going off what it says on the box and what the nurse told me to do.

do you think 2 X 1ml is too much??

Is it the cat or the dog metacam? 2ml a day seems a huge amount to me for a post-burr comforter....my buns are normally prescribed it in 'drops'.... :?

I agree that buns are normally prescribed by drop, but if you are worried, why not call the vet and just confirm?

its the dog one.

you all have me really worried now...

Karen

Apart from having her teeth burred did she have any mouth lacerations or inflammation?

What breed/weight is Poppy?

To give you an idea, for one of my 2kg bunnies after a simple molar burr they would usually have just 3/4 drops of Metacam once a day for two days. I would call your vet (or indeed a vet) for advice before even considering giving her anymore, my gut instinct is that is way too much on the stronger dog Metacam.
