Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Neutering...how long to wait after illness?

Wise Old Thumper
My Neville (approx. 9 month old mini lop cross buck) was given up by his original owner because she didn't want to pay for treatment of a kidney infection. This was roughly about 2 months ago. He has since recovered and doesn't seem to be suffering any lasting effects.

I would really like to get him a partner asap, but he needs to be neutered first...however I am rather cautious about getting him done so soon after his illness.

Any opinions?

I would be cautious too. I guess it depends on his personality - whether he would be a "humpy bun" if put with a spayed female (I don't think my NZ white has ever humped anything:lol:). Alternatively you could choose a female now & settle them in next door to each other until he is ready to be neutered?

He's currently living in a puppy pen in Winston and Snowdrop's room (they're my house rabbits). He REALLY wants to say hello to them and runs up and down the edge of the pen buzzing and spraying ( ) so I think he would pester a doe.

Unfortunately I haven't got any docile female buns to try him with ATM (all mine would probably try to eat him if he humped them  )

I just feel really mean about not letting him mix with other buns :(

I'd say go for it :), but make sure he has a full MOT before hand, as long as the infection has gone, I don't see why his kidney problems would cause him to react badly to the GA - perhaps ask the vet before you book him in :?

Yeah, I should just book him in, but I'm such a wimp

Perhaps I should request blood tests to check his kidney function beforehand?
