Excessive Grooming, Skin Irritation (Contains Pic)

Ask your vet before you put the mite treatment on. Yes it might cause irritation, but the mites could also be exacerbating the existing skin irritation. Let your vet make that judgement for you - can you put a phone call in?

She's got an appointment on Monday MM, I think I'll wait until then to ask so she can look at her again. I'm also going to request they do an X-Ray. She's not eaten hay since this whole issue started, she's grinding her teeth intensely and she's slobbery when she eats out of my hand. She will eat anything BUT hay. I've been giving her plenty of fibre sticks as a substitute.

Her hind legs were my biggest concern at first, then her skin, now her teeth. It's quite overwhelming. I feel slightly let down with the vet to be honest, she's rabbit savvy and has always been brilliant but this time I feel a bit dissatisfied. Maybe it will be better next time.

Am I making a big deal out of it?

I've been typing up a timeline of everything, taken some vids and I need to sort photos out for her next app.

You are definitely not making a big deal out of it. It sounds like there's something really going on for Chloe and you do need to find out what it is. Your vet is stumped for answers? Can she perhaps send the details off to an exotic specialist and ask for their opinion? It's a difficult call I know, as some vets are more open to doing that than others.

Alternatively, when my vet can't solve a problem (and she will admit this) I go to see a dedicated exotic specialist in the area as they often have ideas of tests they can run.

Remind me - has her urine been tests for UTI? Has any been sent off to the lab for testing?

It definitely is overwhelming, and you know you can PM me anytime (I can give you my email addy too if you like and you can send photos and vids)

Yes, it maybe that she is referred. Her urine hasn't been tested, should I request she has that done?

When she had the fall did she land face first and/or hit her head/jaw on anything ?

You're welcome :)

Ask the vet whether a UTI would be suspected. They can do a simple dipstick test in the surgery at no extra cost. Sending off to a lab is a cost, but depending on what they find, it might be worth it.

Hi JJ sorry for not replying sooner. I'm not sure to be honest, she fell off one of these http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/p...nd-guinea-pig-hideaway?pageSize=14&orderBy=1# and onto two layers of vetbed, so it's not like it was a nasty fall, just an awkward one where she fell onto her back.

Still no improvement, seems to be getting worse. Is sitting in her mess, smells like wee and damp. Her appetite has also gone downhill. She's in a bad way.

She's going for an X-Ray, blood test and medical bath tomorrow. Vet said she was concerned which annoyed me because I've been concerned since appointment number one and it's taken two more appointments for further action to be taken. She's deteroriated a lot over the weekend :(

Sending lots more vibes for your beautiful girl. I hope the diagnostics tomorrow indicate what the cause is and thereby a plan of treatment.

I am really sorry to hear this. I am wondering if she may actually have injured her jaw in the fall, hence my question about her possibly hitting her head/jaw when she fell. I really hope that she can recover, I can imagine how worried you must be :cry:

I am so sorry, and I know how worried you are. Thank you for your vid and emails and don't hesitate to contact if there's anything I can help with.

I know how you are feeling, and I hope the vet can get to the root of what's going on with Chloe.

Sending vibes for Chloe today. I hope the results of her tests provide some indications for treatment.
 
Skeletally the vet could find nothing wrong.
However her skin is covered in large areas of sore skin; the more she looked, the more she found.
Her teeth looked fine, and her roots were not bad.
BUT her tongue was abnormal and showing an irregular surface. She said this would probably explain the excessive saliva and the difficulty in eating.
It's possible that there is cancerous infiltration of the tongue, but only a biopsy would confirm this one way or the other.
She felt that the excessive salvia had caused the skin to become sore, and then of course Chloe would lick it because it was sore. This in turn had led to it becoming red and infected (hence the baytril).
She said essentially Chloe was encased in a skin of soreness and there was no way she would be able to de-mat her. She felt this was what was causing her legs to not work properly.
She said that Chloe had become very thin and that the additional pain relief and baytril had not seemed to have eased her discomfort.
She said that taking all the above in to account we had to consider if we had come to the end of the road.
At this point I said yes I think we have come to the end of the road, and she said that is what I feel and I want to ask your permission to put her to sleep.
She then asked permission (at no extra cost) to take a biopsy of her tongue for research/knowledge purposes. I agreed to this and said that we would like to know the result. She said this was fine but cautioned that the result might reveal that her tongue is non-cancerous. I said I understood this, but that even without cancer I felt all the symptoms she was showing made it clear to me that there was nothing more we could. She totally agreed.
She didn't mention the blood test.
