Eddy is soon to graduate fat club

at Boo's review in June I found Eddy had gained 300g ...so he has been on a diet since. He is far from happy about it & notably loves us less :(
I'm really happy its worked though. I not only had to cut out all his nuggets but also change how I feed the food he shares with Boo (veggies, herbs, fresh & dried forage) & be v diligent that she Boo is fed her calorific stuff where she can't be ambushed. He has 55g more to lose before he graduates, if he sustains that & complies with weigh-ins (unlikely 🤣 ) he can have nuggets back, but only 6-12 a day, hand fed

Well done Eddy :D That's very good in such a short while.

It is surprising how calorific pellets are, so that very easily a bunny can become obese (don't mean you, Eddy ❤️) quite quickly. That also means though that it's very simple to regulate their weight by adding or subtracting pellets. It does make it more difficult of course when you have two bunnies with different dietary requirements.

I've hand-fed mine for quite a while and really enjoy it. They have learned to expect it now and will always sit in exactly the same place

thank you everybun.

We came to a weight loss stasis 5 weeks after the diet started, as I'd been leaving such a lot of fresh forage out for Boo. Now I don't leave so much lying around & feed little quantities, whenever Boo is active

Realised just now the weigh in was first week in May - so we are 2 months in to his diet plan

Now I can't remember what I set as Eddy's target weight 🤣 🤣 thinking 2.2k? This was what his fosterer had him at, he gained 100g & was 2.3 with us for almost 2 years. When seen by our vet at his 2.3k weight she said he was ok but wouldn't want him to keep gaining...which to me sounds like a polite way of saying he was a tad chubby. He may well have gained muscle too - he feels so powerful to me (but there again I have only handled compliant elderly bunnies in recent years).

Anyway I just weighed him & he is currently 2.295😍 what a good boy.

He wants the forums opinion on whether he could maybe have 6 nuggets daily for the next week & then review

Oh well done Eddy 👍so me and Georgie have had a chat, and we both think that 6 nuggets is perfectly in order, and very well deserved 😊

Hate to be a party pooper Eddie, but the difference between 2.3kg and 2.295kg is so small it wouldnt even account for the difference between a full and an empty bladder! Sorry mate 🙈

If he’s gained muscle then that would increase his weight as muscle weighs more than fat. Some female professional Tennis players are at a weight that places them as obese! But they are all muscle. Which is why using a BMI as a sole indicator of a ‘healthy weight’ for humans is pointless.

I digress, as usual….🙄

I doubt a few nuggets hand fed throughout the day as a treat would do any harm 😀Not every day though if he’s currently on a no pellet diet. He’s obviously not losing a significant amount on the diet he’s currently on and it could be that is his ideal weight now he’s toned up 😀

Looking at his body shape score can be helpful

If he does still need to lose weight then aiming to loose no more than 0.46kg/week would be ideal. Its recommended to aim for a weight loss rate of 1%-2% per week 😀

It also sounds to me as though Eddie is maintaining a healthy weight now. I think I would start with 3 per day for a week, as it's less of a change, and then weigh him, before deciding whether to increase or decrease. If he's still stable with 3, then I would feel happier about increasing them again.

Eddy apologises for his human's poor communication skills🤣
The RSPCA's lovely fosterer said Eddy weighed 2.2k . After we adopted him it took many months for me to be able to wrangle him on to the scales & then he was 2.3k. He kept up this 2.3 weight for over a year., though was inching towards 2.4k . Then around 6th June Boo had a review so I snuck Eddy on the vet scales & he had gone up to 2.65k So in total he has lost 350g over 9 weeks.😍

Oh sorry Eds, you have done really well then 👍😀❤️

I've just bought him some willow balls as his graduation gift. I've always been really tight & not bought my buns willow balls (since the house is littered with all kinds of forage twigs including willow) but maybe he will enjoy them being round 🤣

Well done Eddy. Gaining muscle is another achievement.
J &B, I want a report on how quickly Eddy turns the willow balls into a pile of willow pieces! My late Heidi was a pro at willow ball destruction. 😍
