Bonding widowed female with adopted male - when to move from neutral to their permanent enclosure?

Hi all,

First post here, hope everyone is doing well!

Bit of context; recently my first boy, Petes passed away at the age of 6, he’s was bonded to my female Loons who is almost 4 years of age. Last Sunday 3rd November, we adopted a 3 and half year old boy, Benji to bond with our girl.

As she is a free roam indoor bunny, we’ve split up her main “office” with double walled x-pens in the middle and they’ve been living side by side since we brought him home.

We’ve been swapping litterboxes, swapping them around to eachothers side for hours at a time and over last week, getting them together in a albeit quite small ( I live in a flat ) neutral area in the hallway.

The time they’ve been spending together has been slowly increasing over the past few days leading us to where we’re at now.

Currently sitting in the bonding pen with the both of them, they’ve been together since about 10am so around 3-4 hours now. We’ve seen some really positive signs but also some signs in which I’m not too sure about. Some examples;

Benji has been grooming around Loons head and particularly her eyes, she puts her head down for this and accepts the grooms, until he ends up licking her eyeball a little too much and she gets up and hops away. When she does hop away, he doesn’t just leave her to it, he will chase her, sometimes trying to mount her and sometimes just trying to get at the grooming again.

She has actually groomed him back, and actually has attempted to hump him herself, this turnt into a little disagreement but overall they’re just back to getting on with it.

It seems odd to me that he is willingly giving her kisses and grooms but then immediately after, trying to mount/chase her, is this normal behaviour during bonding?

They have been laying together, flopping next to/almost on top of eachother and overall seem to be getting on.

The area they are currently in, is not large, but seeing as they are getting on, we want to try and keep them together for, well hopefully, forever now.

Ideally we’d want to keep them in this area for a day or two to ensure they’re proper chill with no issues, but the area is not large enough for us to sleep in and we couldn’t really comfortable sleep anywhere near them. Would it be a good idea to give their permanent housing area a good clean out and move the bonding to that room?

That way we can easier monitor and sleep with them overnight?

I’ve attached some pictures of them two and some videos if it allows me.

Many thanks for reading!

Tony

To be honest, they look quite bonded already, so I would go ahead with your plan. You are very lucky really and hope they are very happy.

Thanks for replying! That’s good news, just in the process of giving the area a good old clean before moving them in.

Currently they’re sleeping next to eachother, Benj is having a proper dream so it’s looking really good. Is it likely that the bonding will start afresh in the new room? Or do you think they should pick up where they’ve left off in this territory?

Sometimes when you put 2 Rabbits in a different area there is a little bit of chasing but it shouldn't last long. This is just to re-assert their dominance.
