Urgent petplan & broken leg advice please

Sending you lots of 'anti-worrying' vibes.

Something tells me you need them right now :)

Aww thank you so much.. Yes they are very much needed. Suppose I just can't stop worrying about him and can't have him go through anything else. He's coming out more at the moment and he just lies next to me and looks at me.. Or cuddles into my hand, I can tell he just wants to be better again and it kills me! :( xxx

Hi Santa, thank you so so much.. No I've been giving him the viscotears first.. About 6am and then his anti-biotic ones at 7.30am? Then again viscotears at 12pm and 5pm & 11pm with his anti-biotic ones at 7.30pm! Oh god.. I'm so annoyed with myself, so could be why they are not healing?

I've spoken to the vets again today, they have sent Harvey's photos of his eyes to an ophtalmologist & waiting for them to come back. They have told me not to worry and they just want to do all they can for Harvey. But I can't help worrying even more.. Should I be worried, can eye ulcers cause serious damage?

Also regarding his eye drops, What do you think I should be doing time wise?

Thanks so much,
Ruth xxx

As Santa says, the abx need to be given first and the lubricant (Viscotears etc) about an hour after. This allows maximum tissue penetration of the abx into the cornea. The lubricant can prevent this occurring.

I am sure that the Vets will continue to do everything possible for Harvey. There are lots of treatment options for indolent ulcers (ulcers which are very slow to heal) so try to remain positive. After all you and Harvey have been through I totally understand that remaining positive is a hard thing to do. Hopefully the Vets will soon get back to you about what the opthalmic specialist has advised.

Thanks so much Jane, and okay.. So do you think this would be okay?

6.00am anti-biotic eye drops
7.30am viscotears
12pm viscotears
5pm anti-biotic eye drops
7.30pm viscotears
11pm viscotears

Thanks so much, and I can't help thinkig that they secretly think it could be EC, and are just not telling me yet. If it is EC, can he recover and will it affect him in any other way?

Thanks xxx

This sounds fine to me. So long as the antibiotics have enough time to penetrate before you add in the lubrication.
I hope it helps to improve the eyes!

Thanks so much mightymax, I'll get right on it and fingers and toes crossed it can help! Then I'm hoping by Monday we should have an update from the ophthalmologist and see what they recommend.

Honestly I can't thank you enough for you advice xx

Had to post this.. Even with his poorly ulcers, today when I let him out to see honey, they normally have about 30 mins with each other morning and night.. Supervised of course!

But Harvey groomed honey for the first time ever today.. For a whole 5 mins, and now they are taking it in turns to groom each other. It just shows how much they are their for each other!

Sorry for the soppiness, but he really has got to get better

Xx

That schedule looks to be fine. I really dont think you need to start worrying about EC involvement. The eye problems Harvey currently has are not a typical presentation of EC 'eye issues'. The problem is far more likely to be a combination of a bacterial infection and all the physiological stress he has endured over several weeks. His immune system has taken quite a hammering and so that will impact on the healing of the ulcers.

Awww... They are just  I do so hope he gets better soon. I know it us an awful worry after everything else, but Harvey hasn't stopped fighting yet.

Hi Jane,

Thank you.. Well it was just a phone call we had but Harvey is booked in on Wednesday..

I'm glad to say his left eye seems to be heeling as from the pictures they took, only scar tissue is visible which is brilliant! Now with his right, it's quite a nasty ulcer.

On Wednesday, he's booked in for a blood test, the first time I went they weren't able to do it as he was wriggling round and I refused having him sedated again. So we have a different vet on Wednesday & hopefully Harvey will behave! The blood test is obviously for EC, he is also having a swab of his eyes done, to possibly change his anti-biotic eye drops and also pick up some anti-imflamatry eye drops. Rather than more metacam.. Do you know about these anti-imflamatry eye drops? I can't remember the name sorry!

So yep, another visit for my poor little man! I'm relieved his left eye is looking positive & healing, just really hope his right will settle down especially after Wednesday and having new meds!

Thanks so much for helping me through this xxx

Good news about the left eye! I hope the right one gets a move on and starts healing too.

Blood tests are normally taken without sedation, but some rabbit just don't want to give up even a drop ...

Good luck with Harvey :thumb:

Thanks so much both! :)

Me too.. More than anything I just want my cheeky little chap back and to be pain free!

Well I really don't know why, but they are suggesting taking it from his back legs, so have to be very careful with him and the moment he Wriggles.. stop immediatly! Stupid question, but where do you normally take it from?

Thanks xxx

There are various possible venepuncture sites- there's the marginal ear vein, the cephalic vein (front leg), lateral saphenous vein (hind leg) and the jugular vein which is usually used if large volumes of blood are needed

Good news that Harvey's left eye is healing and hopefully his right eye will soon do the same x
