  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Split bottom lip

Alpha Buck
Just as I think we're on the up - was feeding Freja a christmas treat last night and kept feeling like something was stuck to her chin/bottom lip. Felt like a poo stuck to the hair but that didn't make sense. Managed to lure her head up with food and had a good look (as best I could with her chomping away!) and it looks like her bottom lip has been split in half. Teeth are fine, eating is fine, but the bottom teeth are a bit more exposed. It had obviously been weeping as there was a little dried ?blood down her chin but was all dried over and I could touch it. Thought maybe Odin had bitten her as she's been a bit bossy recently but not sure how he would actually get her there, so I'm thinking she's maybe caught it on a sharp bit somewhere? Going to scrutinise their run today before they go out.
Gave her some metacam just in case, but I think the only way she would let anyone really look at it would be to get knocked out - she is not nearly as handleable as Odin and considerably bigger and more powerful. Am I ok to just watch it carefully and let it heal alone or should I be trying to get it looked at? We'll be in touch with the vets tomorrow anyway for Odin, I can try and get pictures or video of it in the meantime. Normally I'd just let stuff like this heal but I know rabbits have their own ways sometimes and need more help than other animals!

I would want to make sure it was irrigated and that there is not already signs of infection setting in. Is there someone who could hold her whilst you get a better look ?

Not at the moment, and the problem is that I'm the one who can do the holding AND I'm the one that does the washing etc. Hubby is pretty rubbish at restraining them and not steady enough to do anything else. The swelling has gone down as you can't feel it like you could yesterday.
I'll get her booked in with Odin for tomorrow and do what I can to clean it today - so far she is not letting me anywhere near her at all so it's going to be a softly softly catchee monkee kind of day!
She's not normally quite as bad as she is just now, she's just been quite upset by all the stuff with Odin I think and has got more and more wary of us even though she's not the one being handled etc.

Aw, poor Freja. Getting her booked in with Odin sounds like the best idea; I'd want it checked out, too. Sending her many healing vibes. I'm sorry she's been so upset by everything going on with Odin, too, poor girl. :(
