Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Skye's Eye

A few days ago I noticed Skye's right eye was closed and watery so I brought her indoors to have a better look. She didn't want me to touch it but I decided to bathe it in cooled boiled water. As soon as I put the wet cotton wool over the eye a big seed husk came out, a good half an inch long and she calmed down. It seemed the seed husk had been lying across the bottom of her eye and the eye is slowly getting back to normal. Do you think the eye will now be ok?

Ouch Poor Skye, & well done you for finding it. I'm not sure anyone (other than a vet who can examine it) can offer you assurance about whether it will be ok - really hoping so. I'm guessing issues could arise if the eye was scratched or all of it didn't come out. That its improving seems a good sign & you'll obviously be keeping a close eye on it

It must have been quite painful but she didn't stop eating!

Oh ouch that sounds so painful. Do you think it could have introduced an infection or scratched the eye. Are you able to send your vet a close up of Skye's eye for your own peace of mind?

Well done you in removing the seed, :)

I agree with J&B and C&D :thumb: sending lots of vibes, hope she continues to improve.

With the current Covid 19 issues and how they are effecting Vet consults maybe your Vet would give you some Fluorescein dye to drop into the effected eye. Any corneal abrasion/ulcer will pick up the dye .

I would definitely call the Vet for advice as if there is any sort of corneal abrasion it will require treatment

Yes this is what I wondered about!

Lopsy had this, he was no different except a very watery eye. Took the vet AGES to find the HUMONGOUS grass seed under his eye! He hadn't damaged anything and he had the eye drops for, hmm, three days I think? Been fine since :) Skye will likely benefit from some eyedrops if you can get them but it's also likely she'll show improvement anyway :)

Skye's eye is almost back to normal now. I am keeping a careful "eye" on it and have to go to the Vets on Tuesday so if I am not happy I will speak to the Vet then.
