Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbits eye watering when outside

Our rabbit is 4 months old. He had his vaccination 2 weeks ago. We have kept him inside until recently, every time we have put him in the hutch outside (even for a short period) he gets one wet looking bulgy eye which is quite concerning. He only gets this when he goes outside. The hutch contains the same ground litter material and same hay and same tunnel we use indoors. When we bring him in again it resolves. Does anyone know what this might be? I would be very grateful for your advice. The vet said it could be a scratch on his eye from hay or him scratching it but I am not sure as it resolves when he comes back inside and it never flares up when we keep him indoors.
It’s a shame as he has a lovely run and hutch out there we were going to have him in in the mornings and evenings and outdoors when we are not at home. Thankyou

Did the Vet actually examine the eye including checking for any corneal abrasions using a fluorescein stain test ?

The bulging of the eyeball is concerning and needs investigating.

Any type of allergy would usually affect both eyes. So the fact it’s just one indicates more of a problem. The eye can bulge for a variety of reasons, but it’s very odd that it only happens when he’s outside.

I suggest a Vet check with a Rabbit Savvy Vet.

When the weather is not warm it’s not a good idea to move a Rabbit indoors and outdoors. Rabbits can cope with cold weather as long as their accommodation is dry and well insulated. They cannot cope with extreme temperature changes

Will you be obtaining a Rabbit companion for him ? Rabbits are social animals and being outdoors on his own would be very lonely for him.
