Rosie Snoring - video with sound - snoring or not ??

Hi Jane. I have been watching Rosie very closely this evening for quite a while and have noticed that she is definately doing a chewing action with her mouth every so often. Could a mouth / teeth issue cause something in her chest ?? I am defo taking her for diagnostics on Monday. There is something not right.

Have been reading up on the corvental. Sounds good. My vet not in til Tuesday so will ask her then. Rosie still the sMe today. Has been snoring / whistling for a few hours now while she sleeps so it's a constant sleep thing now. So mighty Max and Jane do u both think not to try zirthromax at all ?? Rosie was on depocillian for her abscess for 3-4 months a year and half ago with no problems. Would it be best to try that first or would she have built resistance to it after having been on it before??

I don't see why you shouldn't try the Zithromax if your vet feels it's the right choice. Penicillins are also very well tolerated in rabbits so there's another one your vet could think about.

I think after the 16 days on Septrin, if there is no improvement, your vet may want to change abx. You could have diagnostics such as chest X-ray, but they do involve a degree of risk and as I've mentioned in the past, my vet feels they are of limited value and doesn't suggest them as a matter of course.

Nicky, please write as often as you want to! I can only give limited help, as I'm certainly no expert. Lots of people on here (like Tracy) have experience they can throw into the mix and enable you to discuss with your vet.

Sorry I have been offline all day, but I wanted to reassure you that if there's ever anything I can do to help you, I will :)

Thanks Mighty Max for ur kind words. Rosie is making that noise constantly now every time she sits or lies down. I am in bed with door closed and can hear her in the kitchen. It is getting worse but thankfully she is still running about. As I said in my previous post there is something defo going on in her mouth. The vet looked in her mouth 3 weeks ago and teeth were fine but I guess she can't see the back ones. If suspected teeth issues would I have to risk an xray in this case ?? I mean if looking in her mouth seems ok. I would take her to the out of hours vet but none of my practice vets r on its a locum vet which I wouldn't be happy going to. . I am just terrified this noise or whatever is causing it is going to block her airways or something and I don't have a vet I can go to. Like I said she is running out for food , playing in the garden running around binking so maybe it's not just as bad as it actually sounds. My rabbit savy vet actually doesn't work Mondays :( :( tho there is a man vet who the rabbit sanctuary use so if i have to go Monday I will maybe have to take a chance. Thanks Mighty Max for posting it has helped alot tonight .

Hi Nicky

If there were teeth/dental issues, then in most cases a GA would be required to have a good look at the teeth and decide what to do, if anything. My vet in Twickenham doesn't do conscious dentals. But certainly it's possible, if you found a reputable vet with loads of experience. They would be able to look at *all* the teeth and see if there are any problems without sedation.

I am a great advocate of seeing the rabbit savvy vet who usually sees your rabbit rather than a locum or someone new. Of course if there's an emergency, that's different. But if Rosie continues to be her happy self, then I would wait to see someone experienced.

I can totally understand why you are so worried. The absolute main thing though, is that Rosie is dong very well right now, despite her snoring and possible teeth issues. And for that reason alone, I feel you should try not to be so hard on yourself and expect yourself to sort out all the issues she has.

Could a mouth / teeth issue cause something in her chest ?? I am defo taking her for diagnostics on Monday. There is something not right.

The fact that we talked about her previous Dental abscess could point to a recurrence of a similar issue. Tooth roots can elongate and penetrate the nasal passages amongst other things. This could cause narrowing of the nasal passages and squeaky breathing. Elongated tooth roots can also predispose a Rabbit to developing a tooth root abscess. I was talking with my Vet (see link in my siggie ;)) about this sort of problem and she said that Xrays would be the only way to obtain definitive information as to what may be going on (either in the chest with regards to the respiratory symptom or for tooth root elongation/tooth root abscess issues the skull). Obviously if the specific Rabbit is already clinically very unwell a GA is a risk and it is a case of weighing up risks V benefits. If the risk meant that further treatment options may be available- eg if a chest Xray revealed a mass or a heart problem rather than infection) then it would not matter how many abx the Rabbit was prescribed, they would not help as the problem was not related to a bacterial infection. Also, delaying an accurate diagnosis could delay commencing the appropriate treatment.

Hope that makes sense, it's only 0555am !!

Mighty Max i agree I so want to wait to see my usual vet. Rosie is still in good form and I hope that it stays that way until I get her down first thing Tuesday morning. My vet is fantastic and worked in New York for 5 years dealing mainly with rabbits and deals with the sanctuary rabbits near her. Like I said before I travel 90 mins to see her. Any other vet near me are more farm type vets or have little experience with rabbits. So I guess like u said she is very experienced and I will have to trust her judgement and stop me trying to decide what to do for the best. I will have to prepare myself that an X-ray may be on the cards tho. I have told Rosie all of this too as I know she understands. I believe animals do understand when we talk to them.

Jane yes we did talk about her previous assess and I am concious that there may be something going on related to this - I do hope it's not elongated tooth roots. But as I said to Mighty Max I will have to prepare myself for possible X-ray. At the moment Rosie is sleeping on her little cardboard throne snoring but content whilst I sit here typing this crying! Thank u for speaking to ur vet about this it clarifies things for me and makes perfect sense at 5.55am! It looks like a very good and caring practice.

At least now I have a start of a plan in place and both me and my husband will take her down first thing Tuesday morning. I just love Rosie so much and hope we get good news and that things r treatable.

I am sure that whatever course of action you decide on with regards to whether on not to opt for diagnostics you will always be doing what you feel to be best for Rosie.

People on here (me included!) can tell of their own experience in dealing with a specific problem and anything their Vet may have suggested as the 'right' course of action. But it would only be 'right' for that person's Rabbit. In each individual case the 'bigger picture' has to be viewed when deciding what is the best way forward. Sometimes a very conservative approach is appropriate rather than having a battery of diagnostics. I think what I am trying to say is that there is no 'right' or 'wrong' thing for you to do. You will do whatever,in your heart, you believe to be in Rosie's best interests. As you seem to have a good working relationship with your Vet I am sure that between the two of you you will come up with a plan of action for Rosie xx

Nicky, I agree with having trust in your vet. I have previously (and will do so again!) travel in excess of an hour to see a trusted vet. When my Max was very poorly and hospitalised, I travelled that distance during the night (3am) and had arranged with the night nurse on duty that I could come and visit him :D I brought him herbs and he (with his drip and cone) would dance about my bag and we would cuddle

I truly believe what you say about animals understanding when we speak with them. I know they understand, and I also know that they are aware we care for them and do everything with love in our hearts.

If you can try and take one day, or even one hour, at a time, and think ..... "we (and Rosie) have got through this and it's all going well", you may begin to feel a little more in control of the situation. I think our fear is greatest when we feel we have no control, and look into the future at what *might* happen. Then we really frighten ourselves

And just as Rosie understands that she may have to undergo more tests, she will also be confused by your worrisome feelings. So have confidence that you are doing everything that should be done (and more in my opinion) and the future will unfold as it will for you all, with the best possible outcome

Thank u both for ur advice once again. Mighty Max I have been trying to do what u r saying and taking each hour at a time. Rosie is still stable and I am positive about that. Today is nearly over and a lot closer to getting my Rosie sorted. Ur max sounded like he was very ill and I bet he was so glad his mum made the effort to visit him so early in the morning. Poor man with his cone and drip. Thank u for ur kind vibes for Rosetta. I pray that the decisions my vet and I make have the positive outcome we so want.

Jane thank u also once again. I will tell my vet all the additional symptoms since I last spoke to her and when she sees her on Tuesday we will both agree on what to do. Rosetta is a strong and fiesty lady. She will get through this.

Nicky - how are you and Rosie today

Hi Mighty Max. I did sleep alot better last night thanks even tho I did check on Rosie twice through the night !! but she was snoring but i "think" it is a bit less and she was in the bunny loaf position so was comfortable so that made me feel better. So maybe the septrin is starting to work ?? I have been at work today so haven't had a chance to listen to her breathing when she is resting like I did at the weekend as she has been out in the garden since 5pm which is good with her head permanently in the grass!! She is still in brill form. I have her booked into the vets tomorrow for 10.30 am as at the very least I want her to check her mouth and to get the stuff you mentioned to open the airways. Will look back to get the name of it. I am glad I have the vets booked and now it's only hours away but I am very nervous too. I am going g to be positive. Whatever the vet suggests I know that Rosie will be ok.

I'm so glad you're feeling positive :thumb:

The stuff to help the airways was Bisolven, and Tracy mentioned Corvental. Both those are worth pursuing (I think you may already have the Bisolven?)

Wishing you a safe journey tomorrow and I hope all goes well for you and Rosie :D

Thank u Mighty Max. Yes she is on Bisolvon. It's the corvental that I couldn't remember. I feel sick now about tomorrow but trying to stay positive.

Sorry I forgot, it was tomorrow and not today!

If it's any consolation, I am right now waiting for my little one who is having a GA with a specialist, and we don't know if he will make it through because of his ill health. I know exactly how worried you must be. They are so fragile, aren't they? And they mean so very much to us

I will be thinking of you and Rosetta tomorrow x

Hi Mighty Max sorry it is today I forgot it was after 12 . So both of us r now waiting on our buns being x rayed. Vet said Rosies lungs sound clear so wants to xray . Sending positive vibes for ur wee bun also. Yes they r so fragile and innocent but both will be ok . Sending hugs to u xx

Oh wow, both at the same time!

I have hardly slept a wink - bet you haven't either - and it took me 1 hour and 40 mins to get here! I left the house at 6.45am.

My little one's lungs sound clear too. When will you get some news? I have to ring at 12.30pm ...

I know that's unreal they r both there right now. I actually slept better knowing I was getting to see the vet today. Yes 1 hour 30 mins drive. She said she would ring me around 12.
