Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Post spay care

Hi all,

Just wondering how long would you keep your doe inside after spaying?
Flo is going to be spayed soon, and she loves being outside (probably spends 95% of her time out - even sleeping!).
I want to keep her in as long as necessary but I'm afraid she might get grumpy! I'm going to try to rabbit proof my bedroom for her.

Thanks :D

Hi FloLo

I would keep your doe inside, and preferably confined to *some* degree (i.e. not able to do huge jumps!) for about 5 days. I would expect that your vet would also provide pain relief for that time.

I kept my girls inside for about a week post spay. They were confined to an xl dog crate the first day, then let them have access to an attached run too :thumb: I put newspaper on the floor of the crate, also in the litter tray, and put hay in a rack so it didn't get stuck in their wounds. They were difficult to handle so to avoid stressing them too much I did wound inspections by encouraging them to stretch slightly to reach some herbs, so I could see their wounds :thumb:

Thank you both!
I have one of those indoor rabbit cages (for when my late elderly bunny was unwell) so I'll use that I think. The hay rack idea is good! Without grass I think Flo will want to eat a lot of hay!
Yes the vet provides pain relief, I work there! Kinda nervous, don't want to be in theatre the day I book her in!

Oh I had forgotten you were a vet nurse Flo! They wouldn't expect you to be in with her would they? x

We get the option, some nurses prefer to do the anaesthetics of their pets! Don't think I could do that though!
