  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sick bunny-Ulcer, Cancer or Something else.

Hello, I'm a long time bunny slave, first time poster here. I'm currently dealing with a serious illness with my oldest bunny, Stormy, and I'm exhausted from trying to figure out what's wrong with him. A friend told me a lot of members of this site are very knowledgeable with health issues so I'm hoping someone can help me out. Sorry in advance for the long post.

Stormy is my very beloved 8 year old Mini-Rex. Up until a few months ago, he was full of energy, zooming all over the place. Several months ago he became less energenic and spent more time than usual laying down during play time. He also started losing weight. We went to the vet for a wellness check and to have bloodwork done. The bloodwork came back normal. She also checked his teeth with an otoscope (not under sedation) and said everything looked normal. Then about a month ago, he started having occasional mushy poos. Then they started being more frequent, several times a day. We sent a sample to the lab. The results came back that there was blood in his poos. My vet said it could be one of two things causing intestinal bleeding: an ulcer or cancer. We did X-rays of his head and abdomen which showed nothing abnormal except his head X-ray showed a small gap between his back teeth. My vet said it could be still be cancer, even though there was nothing visible in the X-ray but decided to treat it as an ulcer. He's been on Sucralfate (an ulcer med) for 2 weeks with no improvements.

He has very little energy, is willing to eat his veggies but not pellets and very little hay. I've been giving him Critical Care several times a day. He still begs for treats but spends most of his time in his hidey house and when I let him out, he lays down.

I often hear his tummy growling very loudly. As loud as a humans. Most of his poo output is mushy. There are some normal, hard poos but they are very small and mi-shapen. He also occasionally has mucous in his poos and piles of cecals.

I'm so concerned and frustrated. He's my little buddy and I love him dearly. My vet (who is the most rabbit savy vet in my area) said that the only way to tell for sure whether it's cancer or not would be to go in surgically, which is much too risky. She thinks his teeth may be bothering him a bit but this is not his main problem and not the cause of the blood in his stools.

The last few days, he's been occasionally doing a chewing type of circle motion with his mouth when he's not eating. I think something is bothering him.

I want to fix my little guy but I just don't know what is wrong and neither does my vet. He has another apt. next Friday. I had to get him some pain meds the other day because he was so lethargic and grinding his teeth.

I love him so much and Im very afraid I will lose him.

Does anyone have any experience with anything similar? Any info or advice greatly appreciated.

Hi hon  good to see you here. :) I hope we can find some answers for you.

Giving this a gentle bump so more folks can see it. :)

I would suggest a repeat blood profile as although all may have been normal a couple of months ago things may look different now. Changes may give your Vet some clues as to what may be going on.

An abdominal Ultrasound would probably give more detailed information than an abdominal Xray.

Has the Vet considered polyps within the lower GI tract ? An endoscopic examination would be required to try to diagnose this. I doubt a GA is an option for such a debilitated Rabbit, but if you are anywhere near Maidstone in Kent I would highly recommend a Vet called Mark Rowlands who works at Trinity Vets

http://www.trinityvetcentre.co.uk/Trinity_Vet_Centre/Home.html

He is an Exotics Specialist and he has performed various GA procedures in 'High Risk' cases. Your Vet may like to contact him any way as he may be able to offer some advice. My Vet (not MR!!) has received great help from Mark which in turn has helped my Rabbits.

In the meantime I would suggest giving Stormy some Fibreplex which could help re-establish the balance of his gut bacteria

What pain relief is he having ? I would be wary of giving Metacam in this situation.

Also, does he have as much 'natural' forage in his diet. A severely debilitated Rabbit can usually gain better nutrition from a diet that is as near to that of a Wild Rabbit as possible. Here is a suggestion of some wild forage that is suitable:
BORAGE
CALENDULA
CAMOMILE
CHICKWEED
CLOVER (leaves and
flowers)
COLTSFOOT
COMFREY
DANDELION (DIURETIC
PROPERTIES)
GOOSEGRASS
LAVENDER
MALLOW
NETTLE
NASTURTIUM (LEAVES
AND FLOWERS)
SHEPHERD’S PURSE
SOW THISTLE
PLANTAIN
YARROW

Please keep us updated about Stormy if you can

I have no advice but just wanted to say I hope you can get to the bottom of it and get some meds to help him.

That's weird, I replied to this post yesterday but today it's not showing up.

Okay, will repost. First, thank you for all the replies.

Elena- He was not put under for any of the procedures.

ParsnipBun- I'm in New Brunswick, Canada. My vet is the only vet around here that knows anything about rabbits. I consider her pretty knowledgeable but I do wish I had an option for a second opinion.

Mimzmum- Thanks for directing me to this site. :)

Jack'sJane- I will talk to my vet about doing another blood test as the last one was quite a few months ago. The pain meds he was given is Buprenorphine. I've only given it to him a few times and haven't noticed much difference in him when I did.

Stormy is on a very healthy diet. I give him dandelion regularly. Most of those herbs you mentioned, I'm not sure where I could get them, but I'm definitely willing to try anything at this point. I have a bunny tummy tea with lavendar, chamomile and some other herbs that I tried giving him but he didn't like it. I will get him some clover today if I can find some in my yard.

BunnyBabe- Thanks. This is very difficult. I'd give anything to have my little man happy again.

I'm going to the call the vet today and see if she can see him early this week sometimes. Will keep you updated.

I'm sorry I haven't updated in so long. Things have been very difficult. We laid my sweet Stormy to rest on Monday, September 17. I already miss him greatly.

Thanks to everyone who gave us advice.

Thank you. I just took down his condo tonight. That was extremely hard. I'm keeping all of his favorites toys and I'm searching for a beautiful bunny urn for him. No matter how many bunnies I have in this lifetime, no one will ever be able to replace him. He was my first bunny and made me the bunny crazy lady I am today. He was very special.
