Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Waxy ears

Jake has had a few issues with his ears, he's usually only prescribed a cleaner from the vets as there's no sign of infection just wax build up. A swab has also come back negative for anything. A few months ago he was given a 2 week course of surolan just in case and this was given after a cleaner and he's been all good since. He's now started scratching his ears and shaking his head a bit so I've had a look and can see bits of wax again. He's not really bothered by them, they don't smell, no discharge/redness/hotness and it's not easy to see the wax. Can anyone recommend a good ear cleaner? The one I'm using at the moment is Otoclean (given by the vets), in the past I've had oto-something else, possibly otoact?? Vet advises to clean regularly but I'm not sure how often I should do this. I'm not sure why he gets the wax build up, he can reach his ears and does get his back feet in it's not like he's overweight/immobile.

i've got some EpiOtic ear cleaner - does a really good job on the dog and the odd cat with permanently yucky ears. Never even knew that ear cleaners existed before a few months ago. There are loads listed on VetUK.

I have used Cleanaural, Epiotic, Surosolve and MalAcetic Aural amongst others.

Which one I use and how often depends on the individual Rabbit. Unfortunately some Rabbits can react to an ingredient in the cleaner. Lord H is especially sensitive. I tend to do just one ear at a time for the first application just to make sure the Rabbit does not have a bad reaction to the treatment. I also only use them if I am certain that the tympanic membranes are intact.

Thank you both :) Will have a look at some alternatives. Perhaps we'll try cleaning his ears once a week. Yes, good point about the tympanic membrane. The only way this can be checked is by a vet or some one who is experienced and has the right equipment, or using ear drops can cause neurological signs. Luckily Jake's are fine and the ear through an otoscope looks a bit flakey, not terrible, but enough to make him shake his ears. When he was at his worst the vet was cleaning huge chunks of wax out his ears bless him
