Vets fees- why are they so high??

no im not meaning the basics such as neuturing, vacs etc... if you cant afford them then you shouldnt have the pet... end of
but some of the other fees seem so excessive. i know ops are costly, but its things like when i got charged £90 to tell me my cat had a broken toe simply by looking and feeling and that was it, meds were more on top of that and it was a weekday in the daytime. again i was happy to pay as he helped to sort Dante out, but just seems a bit much.

i guess its just the way it is, which is fine, ive found a new vets which is a hospital and they really seem to care and be experienced. all of my lot are now registered with them and im due to get the booster vacs again soon which will cost a pretty penny but is well worth it.

Which vets?

My vets charged me £25 for consultation but when I had to go back for a check up this was free.

I was very suprised as to not have to pay at least something for the check up (it was a suspected bladder infection). Although I suppose I was only in there 2 minutes!

I have been chatting to hubby about it and i had forgotten that whilst equipment and prescriptions for dental type stuff is pricey, it is also kept down a little by the NHS... whereas the corporations can charge what they like to vets, so in turn they have to charge more to cover the items as well as basic costs :( very sad.

i agree that there is so much more to the vet than just what i see and as i said i understand the costs of things are to cover that as well as give a comfortable lifestyle to people who have earned the wage :) i really do think that (most) vets do a wonderful job and i am very greatful for all they do.
i never skimp on my pets, they have so much money spent on them to keep them happy and healthy, only coming second to the children (dh and myself last  )... i suppose i just cant help worrying about the animals who arent as fortunate and go to people who wont pay the fees :( but then i should really get used to the fact that thats life!

Bens mum - i have to say i just dont get people who spend so much money on clothes, hair, make up, jewellry etc seems such a waste :?

i guess that is what PDSA and Blue Cross and RSPCA clinics are for - i know they are means-tested but at least then people who genuinely cant afford to pay can still get their animals treated. they probably shouldn't have any in the first place, but at least the animals dont suffer if they do

How can one vet in our area charge £90 for a female bunny spey and another 1 mile away charge £60?:?

I suppose thats down to staff etc as well but it pays to shop around.

i guess its expensive because its like private treatment... shame theres no NHS option really

I jokingly asked my NHS dentist if she would do Mack's dental x-rays for me while she was doing mine as she had digital plates, she asked why and I told her how much it costs the vets to do it (those that have the specialist equiptment).... this > pretty much summed her up

BTW I feel I should add my vets only charge me for the initial consult, Lex & Mack have been going every few weeks since October (Mack up to 3 times a week) and I am never in consult for less than 20 minutes (some times nearer 45) and often I leave not owing a thing. They could have seen a further 4 owners in that time and made £100 on consult fee's so I don't begrudge the initial payout at all.

My local one wanted £120 for a spay and £80 for a male neuter. One a few miles futher charged £55 for a spay and £45 for a neuter. And they were excellend with both my bunnies!

Its def worth ringing round for things like neutering.

Our principal practice is reasonably small/medium size and yet they have to make £60,000 per month to break even so I can well see why prices are fairly high with this sort of cost on a small/medium size practice. Also only around £12000 of that is the wage bill.

A lot of vets are very reasonable with what they charge, and we only feel the effect of it because we don't directly pay for our own medical health services.

However, there definitely are vets that charge astronomical prices that can't even be justified with the costs of overheads etc. I use a large chain vets and they charge relatively cheaply for vaccinations and neuters (to get people in) but their other surgery costs are ridiculous. It cost £245 to have my rabbits tear ducts flushed :?. If I used the old practice I went to it would have been about 45-50 including anaesthetic. I am loyal to my vet though and after she moved I followed her.

i think most things are expensive these days :? not even having a baby is cheap!

my vets are quite good with prices except for vaccinations as they charge £20.50 each! but dentals are between £50 and £60 i get charged different everytime im there lol and Neuters are between £40 and £50 that includes speys aswell and i know some people who have spent £100 on neuters and some one even £120 for a dental!

One thing to consider with shopping around is to be careful of using new places, try to get references from people who've used them - we ended up going for a cheaper place for a dog spay one time and although it went well, the follow-up appointments made me go  The vet wanted me (I was around 16 at the time, and 5'2/8 stone!) to hold a near fully grown German Shepherd up on her front legs while he unpicked her stitches  Then was surprised that I couldn't hold her still enough  Only used them once since because my regular vet was fully booked, and he picked my headtilt rat up by the end of his tail, making him spin around and around because of the tilt and no support to his body - rat had the sense to let rip with a wee all over the vet though  Anyway, since that I heard of other dodgy cases there, one of them messing up a spay badly :? It only worked out about £30 cheaper in the end too, so I wish we'd used our regular vet

wow thats loads for a tear duct flush  im sure when i had Flopsy his tear duct flushes cost about £40 but he needed them done frequently

I will be paying £80.00 for Alfies Neuter in a few weeks. I know thats a bit pricey but I trust my vets, I'd rather pay a bit more and have piece of mind that he is in safe hands.

I am a vet student and am in horrific debt. I think about 20 thousand!

join the club! my only hope is that the salaries are still good when i graduate, that the credit crunch is over! i think its a bonus that the government takes the money back before you see it - you miss it less!!
