  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Vet just scuffed Neville!

Luckily the vet who see's Blossom is really gentle and understanding. When I was holding him up so she could look into his mouth I lifted his front paws off the table and she told me it was fine to put them down so he felt safer.

I hope in never experience scruffing!

I think Neville will be fine to be allowed free range time now. Boys heal very quickly so I am told. Some Vets scruff to avoid being bitten! But I agree it isn't right.

Has he had his stitches out? I would say he should be ok to come out if he has.

I waited a week before letting Shadowfax out, but she was speyed and it's a much bigger op for a girl. Fiver was only penned for about 2 days, because he was going crazy.

I think scruffing scares them more than anything. Some buns do have a lot of loose skin around their scruff, but I can't imagine it being comfortable to be held like that. I would also be concerned that they would kick out (even if their bum is supported) and hurt their back. :( Poor Neville. Sending nose rubs. x

i'm under the impression he removed all of them as he said neville had completely removed one side himself.

i think i'll let him have more freedom now - poor thing is going nuts.

he looked petrified when he got scruffed :(

:( neville is the most sweet natured little bunny i've ever met. he is never aggressive, even when cornered/petrified. uffft.

neville will be very happy with the news of being able to free range again! no stairs for another week or so though.

The vets name should be in his notes so you can avoid seeing the same one again, if you check the name of your favourite vet you can ask for specific ones when you book too :)

One of the nurses at a vets scruffed doughnut and said their mothers pick them up like that. She was looking at me and was wide eyed and looked scared. I asked my specialist about it as he knows so much about rabbits and he said it is scary for them and very stressful. He just scoops her up and he is the only person she doesn't thump at as she hates it normally

Mum rabbits don't do that, unlike cats and dogs. It's why they have trouble with knocking bunnies out of the nest, they can't lift them back in!

I am so sorry to hear that our (RU's) Neville has been treated like that:shock:

I hope you get an apology at the very least.

Glad he is recovering nicely. Hope he has been out and about a bit. Poor love.

Thanks Tulsi :) he's def 'our' Neville here at RU.

He's doing very well, he binkied when I came downstairs this morning. I can't wait to spend some time with him tonight.

My email to the practice mgr is being drafted.

I'm supposed to go back for a final check next week - is this necessary?

scruffs are designed so that the mum can lift them around. but this is when they are tiny to lift a fully grown rabbit by the scruff can be both painful and dangerous. if Neville was to kick he could severely injure his back or even sever his spinal cord leaving him paralyzed. clearly this vet does not no much about rabbits at all i would take it up with the manager and i definitely wouldn't see this vet again and maybe even not use the practice. if they allow a vet with little knowledge of rabbits to treat a rabbit i wouldn't trust them! when Benson was castrated he had stitches, but he didn't pull them out luckily!! but if you had specified for glue then that's what they should have done! after all you know Neville the best which was proven by the fact he did pull a stitch! pain killers should always be provided, Benson's were included in the price. they sound over all very irresponsible and untrustworthy!!
hugs for Neville

nev just had his 10 day post op check, he's 100% healed thankfully. he'll be very happy to get some stair time, he's been getting pretty bored

we saw a different vet at my request, however neville still kicked out and struggled; i'm pretty sure he's now associated the vets with bad times :( he didn't used to struggle too much before. he does worry me when he struggles though.

as for the bad experience, my concerns are now being discussed by the partners, especially the clinical issues and they're going to get back to me soon. they've been very good at keeping me in the loop.

Now I'm following you in instagram I feel I know little Neville a bit more.

They scruffed both of mine last week for claws clipping. Advice I got when I questioned it? If it makes you uncomfortable you can wait outside. Not using that vet again! !
