Please Note - Medical Advice
Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.
You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.
We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.
Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.
Can you give your emergency vets a ring with a view to having her admitted for fluid therapy, getting her stronger pain relief if possible and some Questran as there is nothing else you can do at home.
It may also be worth asking your vets their thoughts on intubating her as I dont feel the gas is going to disperse on it's own. She may also have developed a trichobezoar somewhere in her GI tract from ingesta backing up and this could be preventing the gas from dispersing through it's usual route. The key to moving this is softening it with fluid. An enema may also be an option to consider if the situation is critical.
I am so hoping Honey pulls through for you, I have been here a few times with one of my rabbits and it was such a draining experience.
You don't water too much water and food, w/ the current problem
A rabbit needs 50 ml of water per KG of weight. However, a bit below that is okay for a few days.
Is the left side of her stomach still hard? The left side as in the rabbit's left side if you are facing at her back
You need metocloprimide. If your vet won't give it to you, get your human doctor to prescribe it to YOU, and give it to your rabbit. It's the same medicine.
Metaclopromide is a gut stimulant aimed at increasing gut motility so that food starts to pass through the GI tract again.
You were given Maxolon which is oral Metaclopromide.
If the gas has dispersed I would stop with the Infacol due to the sugar concentration which can encourage bad bacteria to grow, if however she starts to bloat out again I would procede with it. Simethicone is chemically inert which means overdose is almost impossible.
If you still have Fiberplex I would indevour to administer that if at all possible.
I did give the Infacol quite a few time but then i stopped it early hours. Yes the vet said to give the Fiberplex 3 times a day which i have been doing. Can i just say to you SOOZ you have been a rock to me & Honey i think you don't sleep much has well lol as you was there the last few night till early mornings giving me advice, i was in tears last night & thought the worst, but you kept me going & i thank you for that xxx
Thats very sweet of you, thank you.
I work evenings quite a lot and don't get home until 12am so my natural bodyclock for sleep usually kicks in at 2am.
Thats quite right for the Fiberplex but how many tubes did you get? I would keep it up until she is right again as if memory serves me there are 9 graduations in a tube which is 3 days supply only.
I went through all this with me heart bunny Caspian from October to November last year and he was very, very ill. We managed to pull him back so many times but he would relapse after just a few days and sadly after a very long battle we reached a point where he stopped responding to treatment.
I could not see him in pain any longer (this bout had lasted 6 days) and made a hugely difficult decision to let him go.
So I know what you are going through and if my experience can help at all then Casp didn't die in vain and I can get some comfort from that.
