Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

    You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

    We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

    Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

So, Gilbert had his incisor peg teeth removed 3 weeks ago ( with hindsight, I should have said burr them).

He was doing fine after a few days until last weekend. On Tuesday he saw our rabbit vet who said one of the cavities hadn't healed, gave him antibiotics and Metacam to take home.

Sadly, I had a migraine Wednesday afternoon and he didn't get his Metacam and ate next to nothing overnight. He saw another vet (haven't yet sussed out how rabbit savvy but I am not hopeful, despite the fact she has rabbits..J&B knows who at this stage!)

Thing is I woke with a headache today, he's not eating again and the ideal would be to get him hospitalised. My vets can't admit him overnight as not staffed (don't think this is just covid related, but new lack of resources).

He's also registered at local vets but on enquiring, the vet on duty this weekend.. he ain't going there.. she told me rabbits can mate through bars as one example)

Nurse as my vets said they would see him if I was worried but when I said if I thought he needed hospitalisating wouldn't it be better if I just took him to their OOH provision... She said they would see him. I am reluctant to take him on a 45 minute trip just to be assessed and potentially only kept til 3pm.

Vets is 20 miles away, OOH vets is an extra 10 in the same direction so if he needed moving from one to the other...!

Anyhow, my boy has just eaten a bit of bramble leaf whilst I have written this and I am now about to syringe feed him (hopefully!) And with a bit of luck care for him at home til his follow-up with rabbit vet on Tuesday.

Hardly any. That was the main reason he was seen by vet yesterday and they were going to send him home despite no output. Luckily he did a little before discharged.

Now I cannot find the critical care syringes despite having about six of them.

Can the Vet that would see him today not arrange transport to their OOH Vet using an Animal Ambulance Service if he needs admitting ?
 
I seriously need a vet that does own OOH, I can't cope with their lack of assistance on this. I just rang to give an update and other than bring him in (for what?!) They have got nothing to offer

They don't seem to have that provision. They aren't taking any responsibility. I don't even want to organise spays etc there now the way they are approaching admissions. I am baffled as orthopaedics with long admissions was their bread and butter which is what paid for staff checking on inpatients. Something has changed...

Why the hell did I agree to him having his peg teeth removed?!!

It has to be said that Critical Care is a bit pricey for decorating walls:shock: but I think I managed to get about 25ml in the rabbit and I think we have developed a technique of sorts:thumb:

It's probably just as well the little *** doesn't have incisors as he means business...
 
Upper. The bottom didn't regrow, top regrew but until recently haven't been a problem. They were sticking out, as his teeth had.

He actually took the syringe feed quite well but did a ridiculous amount of protesting in between. Hopefully he will see future efforts as not so threatening.

I managed to get syringes from local vets, god knows where I put mine. I have a cupboard for bunny stuff but they weren't in there.

Would he lick CC or mushed up pellets off a plate ?
 
I've found some bunnies prefer to eat it off a spoon which is something you could try, its like some bunnies don't like putting noses in wet food. mousey eats more if I snip Thyme (one of her favourites) in to it, or coriander

Ta. I will walk to Tesco later and get some thyme for him to try. The cc is neat, I remember most prefer it with baby food. I haven't needed to syringe feed for over two years, I am out of practice. He's been scoffing grass also. I have had 40 winks, I am hoping he has been out to the banquet since then.

Glad you managed to do syringe feed and hope he improves. Everything is so much worse when your head is aching. My vet does not do evening or overnight, only other rabbit specialist has evening for current patients only, so I feel your frustration.
I would not want to stress bunny with trips to multiple vets when you know issue.
