  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Still a bit worried about Rolo - update post 57

Ah bless him. Let's hope Wednesday comes quickly for you and he can remain painfree and eating well until then. At least the vet admitted her lack of experience. Have you been given metaclop and metacam to administer yourself or do you have to keep going back?

We have metacam and fibreplex for him.

He's eaten some grape, plantain and a little bit of hay from me but won't touch nuggets. I don't quite understand that if he does have some mass that causing him some discomfort, then why will he eat some foods but not others. Surely by the time the food reaches his tummy, then the tummy doesn't know whether it's banana, hay or nuggets!

Sending more vibes for Rolo - what about giving him some herbs as well, may be he would be tempted by some fresh parsley or basil? I know just what it's like when you have to go to work and leave your 'baby', it is so stressful. I hope you soon get a diagnosis for him and that he is soon eating happily again. Stay strong and positive. Xx

I'm not really sure what they mean by lump, obviously not blockage. Does he take his nuggets if you mash them in water as he it may be his teeth still. Have you got any critical care. Doughnut seems to like that and it's soft and will get some food into him if he will take it. Herbs are also a good idea as above. I'm sure you will get all the answers once you see the exotic vet specialist but in the meantime I would carry on as you are, giving him the medicine to keep him painfree and making sure he eats and drinks.

Still no better :(

But he did give me a good fight when I tried to syringe the fibreplex into him.

He's eaten some plantain out of my hand this morning and I've given him some baby food.

Thank you everyone but if you could spare some more vibes for my special boy, I'd be so grateful xx

Is there any way he could be seen again before next Wednesday ? It's just that if the 'mass' the Vet yesterday thought she could feel might be an impaction. This is not the same as a full obstruction, but it can become more serious. But it may be that as the Vet admitted she was not 'Rabbit Savvy' what she was feeling may have been an enlarged kidney or an enlarged lymph node.

I am really, really not wanting to cause you even more anxiety. But I do feel I need to 'say' that personally I would not be happy to wait another 5-6 days to try to obtain a diagnosis.

Millions more vibes being sent, I know how important Rolo is to you and that you are really really distressed by this situation. I just hope I am not making things worse for you by posting

Sending mega vibes for Rolo. I don't have any experience of this, but I would agree with Jane, I'd try to get him seen by a rabbit savvy vet asap xx

Bleegh :S Poor Rolo. As long as he's still interested in food (and giving you a good fight!) something's still going well, right? But Wednesday is a long time away... And I agree with you: it doesn't make much sense that he'd eat some things and not others if it was something down the back end. But then a lot of rabbity things don't always make sense!

The very best of wishes to you all!

Good that he's fighting you and eating something at least. Would you be able to get back to your own vet sooner if needs be?
Unfortunately the weekend coming up, you don't want to be landed with an emergency vet ...

Thank you so much everyone for your kind thoughts and advice xx

Rolo has been much the same today but this evening he has eaten some grapes, hay, plantain and a few nuggets (hand fed but not forced) - not as much as normal, but he's been to the toilet (number one and number two).

My vets are open tomorrow so I will contact them tomorrow - I'm just worried as I feel a bit let down by them and don't have much confidence in them anymore. I honestly felt like I was telling them their job yesterday and the last straw was when the vet asked me whether she was spayed! For goodness sake, she'd just stuck a thermometer up his backside, did she not realise he had boy bits! I politely said "no she's not been spayed but he has been neutered"

Sorry I've only just caught up with this thread. I'm so sorry to hear that little Rolo is still poorly, and I really feel for you, but he is very lucky to have such a caring, loving mum. I so hope the vets will get to the root of his problem asap. Sending lots of eating, pooping, fighting on vibes for the little fella, and a big hug for you xxxx

Topping up some more vibes for dear Rolo. I hope things improve for him soon. ((((((Hugs)))))) xxxx

Just a little update on Rolo.

He's eaten by himself overnight - I'm so relieved. He had some nuggets, a grape and some carrot. I know too much fruit and veg isn't good for him but at the moment I'm happy to give him anything he'll eat.

So although it's not nearly as much as normal, it's something and he must have felt like eating. He'd also done quite a few little poops in his tray.

He's had a potter round this morning and has eaten a tiny bit of dried dandelion without coaxing.

Thanks again everyone for caring xxx

Continued eating vibes and gentle nose rubs for Rolo - I hope he is soon back to his old self. Bless, I fully understand the worry and stress you are going through. Xx

Rolo has had a better day today - he's eaten nuggets, not as many as usual but a fair few, he's eaten lots of plantain and a little hay, mostly hand fed but he kept looking for it.

This evening he's been pottering around and seems a bit more like his normal self - I really hope my little boy is turning a corner xx
