  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Is she a bun that will come for cuddles?

Harlequin was super stressed going into the bathroom for bonding and kept throwing her self at me and the walls. In the end I caught her as she launched her self at me and just held her firmly stroking and talking to her which helped quiet a bit or some where dark and quiet might help.

Do you have any clue what possibly spooked her?

Yea she does I held her for 10 mins and her breathing did seem to slow more but I've put her down and she's back to being super hard heavy breathing :'( she's all floppy too..

They both got spooked by people coming into the house for no reason and I wasn't there quickly enough like normal :( Apricot isn't normally phased by this kinda thing though and Penelope is back to normal

I'm sorry to read this :( I would agree with the dark and quiet advice from Lisa. Also somewhere where she would feel completely safe and which is well-known to her. Sending her lots of vibes.

Yea that's exactly what we've done, but Idk how long this should go on for..? Its been nearly 45 minutes.. I feel like I should take her to a vet but that might make things worse.. Idk if they'll be able to do anything either :'(

Personally, if you're absolutely sure that it has been caused by being spooked by visitors, then I would not take her out of her normal environment. However, I don't know if a vet could do anything and so this might not be right. Perhaps ring the OOH vets and ask for advice.

 sending lots of vibes for her and hugs to you xx

Maybe call the vet for advice, hope she calms down soon.

I can understand this. They should be able to confirm whether or not they could treat her in any way though. If their usual procedure would be to keep quiet and monitor, then you could make a judgement based on that information.

Do you have a pet remedy diffuser or similar? Rosemary is meant to have a calming influence. She might pick up on your stress if she is in tune with you, so try to keep calm but I know it’s not easy. Will she eat any favourite treats or foods?

She won't eat anything :'(

I was worried about that I'm staying calm, we're in their room, it's dark, I put a towel over the cage she's laying in, and I'm laying down next to her, Penelope is more than okay she keeps jumping on me, she has groomed Apricot a bit too

I would do exactly as you’ve done. I’d see what the vet suggests though, as to how long to leave her etc. Is she normally bothered by strangers?

Yea will do, that's what's worrying me the time, well over an hour now, Idk I hoped she'd snap out of it you know?

No not at all, Penelope can be shy and spooked sometimes (not like this though) but Apricot is very confident normally, she's the one who would run up and greet people and jump all over them.. She's the most chilled one.. When I came in they were kinda running around in circles obviously spooked, then I realised and went to do the distraction thing with treats which normally ends it (it can happen every so often) Penelope saw the treats and raced over but Apricot slumped down in the litter tray and just looked really odd, breathing very heavy, eyes closed, then she stretched out, but still didn't look relaxed :(

If the vet says to monitor I would sit with her as long as she wants to be on your lap as it helped the first time. Hopfully she will calm down for you. Sending lots of calming vibes for her and hugs for you xx

How’s she doing now xx
Her breathing has improved :) I put her back on my lap and she's eaten one treat, and has groomed a little, Penelope has kept coming over and grooming her face more too, so I'm hoping this is good news, thanks for asking xx
