Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Runny nose and weeping eye u/d D1ck vet tomorrow

Is she receiving pain relief and also some eye drops as her tear ducts are likely to be very sore. Is she drinking and what is her output like ?

She got pain relief at the vet yesterday (not sure what one) and I have given her metacam today.

She hasn't got eye drops. Which would be best?

I have been giving her some water when I have been syringe feeding her, just in case she needed it because it was very hot yesterday.

Her output thankfully has been fine. She has had a blockage in the past, and bad tummy problems when she stops eating and pooping, but everything is working ok just now.

She is eating little bits now, so not sure if I should keep up the syringe feeds because she is getting really cross, and the more I syringe feed her the less she will want to eat herself.

I have decided to that unless the results of the ct would show something that could be fixed, I won't be going ahead with it because of how she is now.

Honey is doing better today. Not 100%, but a lot better.

I wondered though if there would be any benefit to her to get a ct scan done? Can they even operate on a rabbit's nasal passage since they are nose breathers?

Also, should she have had a chest x-ray to check her lungs? They sound clear and always have, but I've been worried that they may be damaged from all the infection.

Whether surgery would be an option would depend on what the 'mass' actually is. If she were to have a CT scan then I suspect it would be a full body scan so this would include the lungs.

Thanks Jane. And thank you for all your support with this.

I suppose it would be better to talk it over with the D1ck vets when she is referred, and see what they suggest. I assume she either has some adnormality of her nose, because she has always sneezed and I got her at about 6 months old, or it is scaring from the infection.

Still no results, so I phoned the vet. They found out the lab hasn't even received the sample yet :(.

Honey was OK with her sneezing for a couple of days and now it has come back, perhaps worse than before. She is getting some Septrin in the meantime because I didn't want her to continue to get worse.

I have no idea what will happen if the sample doesn't reappear. I'm not putting her through that again, with a GA, and then put her through a CT scan in a few weeks.

Oh how annoying

I hope the Septrin is of some benefit to her xx

The results reappeared and are back. She has an aggressive form of pasturella, and is heavily infected with it :(.

The lab said the septrin should help, but so far there has been no improvement. The vet wants to wait till Friday to see if there is at least a slight improvement. If there is, she is to continue on Septrin for another week, then see about getting a ct done at D1ck vet. If there is no improvement, I think he wanted her to go straight to D1ck, which wouldn't be ideal for her.

I'm quite worried about her now. She is doing ok apart from being slightly quieter and sneezing loads, but I'm worried about what will be found. And I had a terrible job getting her to eat after the x-ray :(.

Doesn't look like the Septrin is doing anything. Honey has been on it almost a week and now her eye has started weeping again.

Oh no Weedug I am so sorry to hear about Honey, that sounds really awful :( you are doing all you can for her and I hope you and the vets find a solution soon.
Sending mega vibes to Honey x

Thank you tonibun and Rab-bit. I am waiting for the vet to call back to see where we go from here.

Thanks Zoobec. The vet finally phoned last night, and Honey is to stay on the Septrin because the results showed it should work. She is also to have metacam (surprised she didn't get that from the start), and he recommended I try a nebuliser and he will give us some F10.

He has shown the x-rays to 2 other exotic vets :)shock: didn't know they were that interesting), and they agree that there is something not good in her nose. All this examining it and saying how bad it looks has got me really worried.

So the plan is to give her another week on the other meds to try to get things under control a bit, and send her for a ct scan to see what it is in her nose. I don't know if they will keep her in overnight since it was so hard to get her to eat last time.

She is still eating and drinking and pooping fine, but is starting to look a bit sorry for herself :(

Hope all the treatment works soon, she's getting the very best of care from you and the vets anyway :thumb: I suppose now you know it was hard to get her to eat last time you and the vet can be prepared for it.

I'm sorry about Honey is having such a hard time. I have had, over the years, three rabbits with symptoms of Pasteurella and Azithromycin cleared up the infection. One rabbit had really bad symptoms and I didn't think he had much of a chance at all but his infection cleared up really fast with the azithromycin. After the infection cleared we still kept him on the Azithromycin for another month, and he totally recovered, its been two years and he still has no signs of infection and seems really healthy. So, I thought i would share that with you incase you want to try another antibiotic. One thing about the azithromycin though, there has been reports of stomach upset with it, however, all three of my rabbits didn't have any stomach upset though, and I wonder if its because I used the pfizer brand and other people may have been using the generic. I did a lot of research after my rabbits had the snuffles symptoms and the other meds that have seemed to work for people are the injectable penicillins.

I'm so sorry that Honey is not well.

Over the years I've had 4 bunnies with pasteurella infection (all lower respiratory infection, so in lungs). Mine have always had injectable Duphapen, alongside a second antibiotic. Baytril worked for my trio, Wally was on Marbocyl.

We had to nebulise Wally with F10 in saline and it did give him relief. Did the vet warn you to be careful not to breathe in the vapour yourself?

Wally was also on Corvental which is a drug that helps to open up the airways and make breathing easier. It was recommended by Molly Varga, one of the specialists that my vet sought advice from.

I hope you manage to get Honey's infection under control.

Thank you for the replies. I will see how this week on the Septrin goes. It's good to know there are other things to try, although I think the vet will probably just refer her for her ct at the end of the week.

Honey had her first shot with the nebuliser today. I was more scared than she was . She seemed to like it, although she was scared. But she spent most of the time up near where the mouthpiece went into the box.

I really hope this helps because her sneezing it getting worse, and she is starting to look like she is feeling unwell. I am thinking of just asking to have her referred for the ct at the start of the week instead of waiting. I know the vet wanted her breathing better, but she is getting worse every day, not better :(.

Honey is getting referred to D1ck vet. There has been a little improvement after I started the nebulising but she is still sneezing and her eye is still wet at times. She looks utterly miserable some of the time, so I don't feel I have a choice but to go ahead and risk her not eating after.

She really enjoys her nebulising, and surprisingly it doesn't stress her at all. When she is finished in her box she is quite happy to eat her hay or supper. She sits right where the nozzle goes into the box too

They will do a ct scan and see what is causing the darkness on the xray in her right nostril. Really, really hope it is nothing nasty.
